well the new year 2014 is around the corner, I found gold 4to5 times this year 1852 gold coin. I am a veteran hunter and would like to use this forum as a way to express myself. I live way up in the mountains and would say a few things,,, there is really only two types of treasure hunting that is with a detector,,,,by luck ok what do I mean by luck well some one that gets out on the weekends to the park or school and if this person happens to find some thing old it has a 98% chance of being worth less than 100 bucks,,,,there are a lot of this kind of hunters out there,,,,In fact most of the people who own a metal detector are doing this type of hunting "Blind Luck hunting" I have done it myself for years Real treasure hunters do research,,,This is the second type of hunting I am talking about skill hunting. This type of hunting is going to the library or subscribing to a treasure hunting magazine,,,or buying some books on the internet,,Life Is going by quick so don't waste your time on hunting on a whim and hoping to get lucky it really isn't worth it. Bottom line don't waste your time

Very well said and very very true. Jimmy in N.C

I have been hunting 12 years and have yet to find a gold ring of significance or gold coin. I would say you are doing well

parks and swimming areas and such is where I found most of my gold rings,, you have to know when you have a pulltab,,nickel or gold ring they all register the same.I found gold rings years ago doing this, you dig every target that registers like that. parks parks parks

If you are a real treasure hunter as you seem to be saying you are then good luck to you. I hope you find your fortune. 99% of us do this as a recreational hobby and don't expect to get rich.

I agree with you that research greatly increases your finds and a lot of us use it, but in the end all those extra finds from research will only increase our enjoyment of the hobby, not make us rich.

You say --- "Life Is going by quick so don't waste your time on hunting on a whim and hoping to get lucky it really isn't worth it. Bottom line don't waste your time". --- I certainly don't agree with that. Metal detecting can be a relaxing and enjoyable experience even if you are only finding clad and the occasional silver or old coin. The chance of finding a nice ring, ancient relic, or key date coin, etc. is part of the thrill of the hunt.
