Note/Question on depth

I read the tesor catalog and see this one detector that Tejon? is deeeeeeeeep. Then the Cortes, then the others. How much deeper is deep? Say you put a Tejon, Cortes, Minelab, Shadow, and a Garrett how much depth differnce is there? This is with standard coils.

Most people would say Minelab but the Tejon has impressive depth and Shadow X-5 is supposed to be deep.A lot of people would say know your detector.

There are several detectors on the market today that will match up pretty close to one another. This list would include metered and none metered models. Another thing to consider is reading of comparisons using inches instead of percentages which can be somewhat deceiving. By this I mean that in certain ground conditions one detector hits on a target at say 10 inches and another detector only can find the same target at 8 inches. Two inches or 20 per cent less. Take the same two detectors and use the same target in ground conditions that are somewhat MORE challenging and the one detector hits at seven inches and the other at slightly more than five and a half inches. The percentage has remained the same but the difference in inches has changed. What would be the outcome if the target is changed? One more question to ask of yourself is depth the only factor worth considering? Personally I also want a detector that has excellent target separation discrimination in areas where there are numerous targets both good and bad. I also want a detector that is very versatile and can be used in many different situations.

...and again I assert the laws of electrophysics. I had one bloke tell me the Tejon wasnt worth squat! He could out-deep it with his MXT all day. What do you make of that?

Thank you all so very much for your replies, this topic seems to be very different for some of us, from what I read and I guess I am just following suit. We all want more depth. I can be thankful for one thing the ground here is so clean not much minneralization at all, my cortes will just hummmmmmm away at a good constant with little adjustment at all 9inches off the goround or laying flat on the ground just one steady low hummm. I think that is right, no increase or decrease. IF I am wrong somebody tell me? Thanks Ronnie

All play a part in a good detector .I would say that good discrimination is the most important thing to have as i have had quite a few top line detectors that have had great depth but cr-p discrimination and i can tell you,its no fun diging 12" deep holes only to find a rusty old nail .
PS The best finds that i have made have been surface finds .

On a normal detector .If you set your detector at min disc max sens then yes it will go deeper.
You will also have to dig a lot more holes and a lot more iron and trash as the detector will get confused on the deeper targets.I would say that thats the same for the Cortes

Ronnie,Digging a foot in Chsrleston isn't hard digging.Try digging a foot in the upstate.Nobody wants to dig over 8 inches in this hard red clay.Usually your find is on the clay area and a real old find maybe in the clay a couple of inches. Most finds stop at the clay layer.

You should barely hear a threshold hum.Raise and lower the coil up and down while adjusting the ground balance until there is little difference in sound. You can have the threshold a little louder for ground balancing.Once it's ground balanced turn the threshold to just a whisper. Some people say you get a little more depth if you have it ground balanced slightly positive. That's when you lower the coil and the threshold goes up just slightly. Some people say to pump it up and down fairly quickly while you adjust the groundbalance. <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">
