Notching idea

I have been thinking about the Notch function on the Racer 2. One of the things that I liked about the V3i was its ability to notch out any vdi number at will. Now with the Racer 2, of course, teh VDI numbes are a bit different, but just going by the numbers in the manual, and doing a little testing on your own, I have come up with an idea that I would like to float to you folks and see what the general consensus might be.

Ok, so assume that I am only interested in coin shooting. To keep teh machine on track and quiet, especially in some trashy areas (think public park). How about setting up the machine like so;

Assume Racer 2 VID number are as follows:

Penny Copper VDI 79
Nickel VDI - 30-31
Dime VDI - 79
Quarter VDI - 85-86

So those are the only tones I want to hear and I set up my notch as follows;

ID Filter 28
Notch 32-63 Keep 64-67
Notch 68-77 Keep 78-87
Notch 88-89 Keep 90-99

I think that this would work quite well to isolate just the tones that you were interested in hearing. Does anyone see a flaw in this thinking?

thanks

I'm gonna have to see some more info on the notching with this machine. I'll have to play with it some. What concerns me is when in trash like you mentioned, blending is going to occur and will drag the TID up maybe but more than likely down. IOW if you are wanting to notch 75-79 and something goods blends into that area it "might" be silenced. However looking at it from another angle and to me the secret to learn about the machine is it will sound off a high tone when blending many targets around a good target even though it might not be flashing that particular number in the TID. I want to play with notching and just yesterday talked with a buddy about it but haven't yet. You'll have to be in real world conditions not air testing to see and do what I described. I feel blending might present a problem notching but don't know, in heavy trash like you mentioned.

I have found that in heavy trash, the Racer2 presents itself admirable. You can really hear the good from the bad. I took it to a park today and there were literally THOUSANDS of bottlecaps strewn across hundreds of acres. The machine just never shut up. After an hour, I simply notched out everything that I didn't want to hear. Did I miss some targets? Maybe, but I wasn't looking for gold or jewelry, just coins and I wasn't looking for Zinc's so pretty much I ID Filtered out everything below 75 and left the rest come through. I managed 9 dimes, 3 copper pennies and 12 quarters in another hour and a half. Not a bad showing by any means and I didn't go crazy with the machine reporting on every single bottlecap. ( I could have probably been more selective in taking care of the bottlecaps, but I wanted to try a Slash & Burn, Take No Prisoners approach. I think it worked pretty well, but like everything else, you have to play around with different settings.

I have to have a lot more time with the machine to learn the nuances but it's so nice to be out hunting and getting results easily.

What you did is what I'll do after several hunts with the R1, CoRe, and even once with the Gold+. After I couldn't pull anymore I'd run the disc all the way up to 79 and pick the rest out. That should not be a problem with the R2 as you can silence the iron now. What you did will clean up pretty dang good. However there just might I'm sure be a lot more there.

You will lose some gold but your looking for coins not rings. I don't like notch because some coins are mixed with other coins or targets and the machine may pick a lower or higher VDI

I agree. What I did to try to minimize that was to try to incorporate a few VDI numbers higher and lower than what the particular coins would scan as. So if a coin like a quarter would normally scan at 84 - 86 I would include 83 to 87 or thereabouts. What I have to do is to take some readings and see if I can selectively allow the VDI numbers that are important and eliminate those that aren't. I think it's easily doable with the Racer 2 as it is with the V3i. I could even try some gold rings mixed in to include them. Yes, I would increase the possibility of pull tabs but that would be where I would need to train my ears to hear those variations. What is nice, is that the whole process is simple. No hoops to jump through, and no endless pages of menu selections.

I have tried to set it up similar to what you suggested. In my soil the nickel ID was not too accurate and jumped around a lot so having the small nickel notch did not work well for me.

If it works then go for it maybe use the 5x10 also for more separation...I'm a relic hunter I dig just about any target I can hear even iron targets

What was your soil reading. If the nickel jumps around you can always increase the acceptance level. Let's say your nickel is jumping from 28 to 34, just include those numbers in the accept list. You may dig some pull tabs, but you should hit the nickel. Please don't assume that I know what I'm talking about LOL! I am learning this machine as well. I'm just operating on what I THINK is common sense. I haven't even experimented with Iron Audio which may allow me to tailor the machine even finer to eliminate my unwanted targets. All I know is that this is a real joy to work with., Light and fast without a lot of unnecessary 'add ons'...

If you do decide to go for gold rings, I would accept 21 through 27 as well. You would be surprised how many small gold rings fall in that area. Many many many gold rings are far lower TDI than nickel.

Point taken. that's what is so much fun about this machine. It's very adjustable and customizing it is a snap.

On My Racer air testing I get the following readings;

Indian Head Penny 70
Copper Penny 79
Clad Penny 68
Large Cent (184:geek: 94

I'm not sure what kind of area you hunt and it's age, but you notched out Indians at 70. Plus flying Eagle cents. At depth the numbers can be way off. I have dug targets in the 40's and 50's at depth and had them turn into 70's on the surface. They could have been lying there for decades surrounded by nails decomposing. If you run notch patterns know the area you are in and the possibilities of your finds. I listen to almost all of it. It beats the brain, but it is the only way to hunt in my opinion. With the Racer 2 you can turn down the iron noise to a manageable volume. The only time to run notch patterns is cherry picking modern coins at athletic fields. JMHO

As I said, this is only one way to run the machine. If hunting Clad (as you say) it works perfectly. If hunting relics, or older coins, you can make the necessary adjustments or none at all and hear everything and make your own decision.

Most of my detecting is on parks and atheletic fields. Now I know that some people have pulled pretty amazing things out of those places, but mostly around here (Unless you get out to the farmland east of here), you're likely to find modern clad and that's about it. The beach is another story and certainly, I'd change the settings to hear everything.

Ran mine Saturday with the 5x10 and ran the ID filter up to 78 and notch in 30 to 33. Picked up 7 wheats with most at around 5" and 1 nickel. Dug a few tabs and but dug 32 copper pennies, 6 dimes and 2 quarters. This is hard hunted torn down old apt. complex. Was only hunting for coins. Going to hunt the same court yard next week and open it up looking for that stray ring but just wanted to eliminate most coins. Very flexible MD. The different uses it offers has me hanging on this MD

If you run the ID filter to 78 you can't notch any number lower than that. What you need to do (and what you probably did) is to run your ID Filter to 28 or 29, skip 30 to 33 and then Notch 34 to 78 if that's your preference. Otherwise you lose the ability to notch any number lower than what the ID filter is set to.
