notch

Somebody please tell me exactly what notch means!!!! I am obviously new to detecting but am finding quite a few things. Everytime I think I have the detector set properly I start to second guess myself. Thanks

It's another form of discrimination, but notch only eliminates a small segment of targets.
Some use it to knock out certain pull tabs. Of course the possible down side is that it
discriminates out everything in that notch range. If you are hunting in wall-to-wall pulltabs
and it is getting to you go ahead and notch them out. You will miss some good stuff but
you will also miss those tabs in that range you notched. When you "notch" a target you will
hear targets both below and above that notch level you set. Easier to do than explain I am
thinking.

What detector are you using by the way?

You can read about notch and all kinds of things here:

Go to www.detecting.com
The directory is on the left side
Go down to and click on "Ask an expert"
Then under the directory again click on "search"
Enter what you are looking for...in this case "notch"

There is a lot of good information there. Here too I might add.
Everybody was new once. Sure want to know that you have
your detector set the way you want it. Just work at it a little at a
time so it doesn't overwhelm you. This should be fun and not like
work. Good hunting to you ! Gene

Thanks for answering. That clears things up a little. I have a a Quick Draw 11 and a Pioneer 202. I think they are almost the same.

Yes, I believe the electronics are the same in these detectors.
They are a highly rated detector for sure. If you like you can do
a search on this forum and come up with all kinds of information
on what others have said about these 2 detectors of yours.
Just type in QUICK DRAW 2 or PIONEER 202 and select exact
phrase and the Bounty Hunter Forum, all dates. If you do this you
will be reading for awhile and no doubt have a good understanding
of what to expect out of your detectors. You have 2 good detectors
that's for sure.
I am sure others would explain notch better than I did but I did want to
answer your question. Try it with some pull tabs and coins on top of
the ground with no other targets around and I am sure you will get the
hang of it.
Good hunting to you ! Gene
