Notch or Disc?

Mezrein

New member
Been reading through the forums and just had a thought, I usually run with my disc notching out fe, but dont go much higher than that, just up until FE goes away. Would it be better if I dropped my disc to 1 and actually notched FE out with the notch button?

Excellent question. I would never notch out iron because I want to hear some of the iron. It seems that most all of the older coins I find are next to iron. I am afraid of losing a coin with iron notched. With the F5 being a very responsive detector, it has the ability to get a coin when it is very close to iron. With my F5 I hunt with my disc set at 7 to 10 with nothing notched. I dig hardly any iron with the F5, as a matter of fact, I dig way less rusty iron than I do with my Explorer 11. In the future, I will be buying a 11 inch dd coil and with it's razor sharp hot spot I am sure I could hunt with no disc at all and hear both the iron and coins in close proximity.

Doesnt having it set at 7-10 cause a lot of iron signals to pop up? I think that might drive me nuts hearing the low bass sound of the iron?

Not on my f5. I set it at disc. at10-15. I hunt mostly lake beaches here in central Virginia. Ground is like cement.

I have found that a low disc setting in the 7 to 10 range eliminates some but not all iron signals. I guess what I am trying to say is the notch for iron is a large block of numbers. I am afraid that coin laying next to a rusty iron object will be lost if iron is notched. I do not like all metal hunting as I like to hear the tones of all metals including iron. Yes it gets real busy, but once you adjust to it, you will find coins with rusty iron real close. Some detectors offer a large iron discrimination spread to allow you to hear just enough iron. This large spread will allow a person to hear coins next to iron. The AT Pro is one detector that offers this and it really does excel with it's see through ability. It comes standard with a DD coil which helps immensely in trashy sites. I have no doubt that a dd coil on the F5 will do great in these trashy spots full of iron.
