notch and disc control explanation for the Minelab Sovereign GT

Could anyone please tell me if they have had more success finding gold rings by using the notch and disc controls for the Minelab Sovereign GT?

I dont use the Sov.... but ive been hunting a day or two and most machines now have both. On a beach a good many just use mild disc to knock out iron. Any time you notch or choose a specific target you take the risk of loosing good targets. The one exception ive found is bottle caps.... ive not found a lot of good targets that hint in that range on most machines. Its also not that simple..... when you notch lets say on a digital machine number 120.... it may affect how you hear targets 5 digits above and below that digit. Even with the learn on machines you are safer to just knock out iron and dig most everything because deep targets sometimes change tones as you get closer to them.

If you find a pull tab reading 165 and then slowly raise the notch to where it just bearly knocks it out you'll be blocking about 80 to 90% of all pulltabs out while still recovering most gold rings. Only use this at a site where there are just too many pulltabs. Dig up my "Splitting Hairs On Rings" thread to see the data behind this. The discrimination dial doesn't need raised for iron since the Sovereign already blocks most iron. However, you can raise it to block up to say about 90 VDI and this will eliminate most bits of foil while still recovering most rings.

Hey Critterhunter, Good to see you posting again. Have you found a job yet ? I need to ask you a question about the lipo you recommended. I bought the charger and two Batteries. I can't get them to charge in lipo balance as you recommended. I can charge them in lipo charge. Both batteries act the same. The charger will start to charge and in lipo balance and then a few minutes it says Batt voltage error cell connect. Do you have any suggestions. Thanks Critter have a good new year. Charles

You must have both battery plugs plugged into the charger for one thing and the cell count should be set to 3 for a 3 cell lipo. You might also have the lipo cell type set wrong.

Here's what works for me ......

But this is what happens with the following settings :

1. You will neverdisc out all coins , the sovereign will still pull them !
2. You WILL miss some gold , thinner , lower carat or alloyed .
3. Med. To large rings ( AT OR NEAR COIN SIZE ) will respond

Set disc. At 3 tics from zero
Set notch at 4 tics from max.
Iron mask off - important !

Sens. Auto or manual set off chatter response ( back from chatter )

Band 2
Threshold set barely

Now the secret ........

Switch to silent ... Then bring up threshold up to slight tone while in silent !

This has made my machine give up the loot ,.... Enjoy
