It doesn't seem unusual at all to me that you would find more foreign coins in a colonial-era state. A longer occupation equals more people passing through equals more coin drops. Anyways I love those old Canadian silver coins, last year I found a 1966 dollar, a few old dimes and one 1906 five cent "fish scale" ... being 60 miles from the Canadian border helps too.
