I just purchased my Golden umax from Richard at Backwoods detectors and finally had an opportunity to use it, if you can call 45 minutes using it. Here in central Alabama the the heat index today was 107 and the sweat was actually pouring off and onto my new detector so I decided to call the hunt short. However I did find something interesting about the Golden. I had a faint beep in disc., more like a beep crackle beep crackle. The disc. was set just below nickle. I, trying to learn the machine, switched over to AM and adjusted the threshold to a slight hum and swung my coil over the area again. It only produced basically a disruption in the threshold hum so I dug to see if in fact there was anything there. Been there and done that with all the "high end detectors" with the usual "must have been a hot rock or something" but this time was different! It was not a good find by any means but at 6" I found a small "two inch" square nail. My question to all the Tesoro gurus, Why did the machine actually give a "beep" at all due the the disc. setting and why would it give a beep and not a sound in AM? I am sure it has something to do with the "Halo" effect but really that's pretty impressive to me to find a very small square nail that deep. If it can find a small square nail at 6" what will it do on a large cent or barber dime which has more conductivity?????
