i have a new tesoro vaquero detector, the lifetime warranty is great.however i was weened on a ace 250 which has tid and relative depth to help you find your target.the vaquero doesn't,it seems to rely on a more of a guessing game as to how deep it is and what it is.pin pointing is great and as it was a present i can't make to many waves about my disfactication with the md .what i am wondering about is whether i should have pushed for a minelab x 70.i keep going back to the ace to find paying targets. the vaquero is a md ,it finds everything on the beach in both modes however in the park's it's anybodies guess,to what it is and how deep it is.maybe i will be like the rest of you and keep searching for the perfect detector . i don't want to sound like a whinge but where i live you can't try before you buy ,so you have to read all the hype and try and figure out what could be the best for you. i find more with the ace than the vaquero, however the ace pin pointing mechanize is failing and the agent it was bought from will not reconize any problems.my question is this, should i go towardsthe x 70 or stick with the vaquero and hope that it will all work out in the end blowfly lands wtg hh

hi blowfly. there are several great hunters on here who can address your questions concerning your vaquero a lot better than i can, but i for one think you should get a machine you are comfortable with, no matter what the brand name is. do what is right for you. hh,

Hi There Blowfly,

Your Tesoro should do a good job for you if you give it time, but if you don't have any confidence in it you should probably move on to the XTerra.

I'm due for a new machine as I've been hunting with a Fisher 1266 for the last 8 years or so. I'd like a VDI just to help me make up my mind on whether
to dig or not, but it's kinda fun in a way trying to guess what's under the coil by the different tones I hear.

I had a BH and a G.

Tesoro ended all that.

I found the midrange TID to be unreliable.

It was a frustrating game.

You said:

Speaking for myself, the Vaquero is superior
in target ID and depth indication.

I have a better indication of the depth with the V.
The 250 you can't tell what it is. The responses
sound crummy to me. If it is just high conductive
coins your after, the 250 is OK. So is a BH. And
it's cheaper. They are both slow as molasses. I
can not deal with that.

You also said:

To me, that makes no sense. That sounds like
someone who has not found the right machine.

The Vaquero has superior responses, and a
disc that's hard to beat. I would not waste my time
guessing if I got my V, unless I'm digging all signals.
I'm talking signals that the 250 can't even respond to.
That's something els. Not sensative enough to gold.
That is a NO NO as far as I am concerned. I like my
gold finds. Most of them simply would not happen with
a 250.

The wrong responses and the lack of good response
characteristics of the 250 cause me to see this the
exact opposite as you. The 250 is a guessing game
that's disappointing, except for high conductive coins.
But I never spend time looking for just high conductive
coins. Waste of time usually, when there are better
fish to fry. I get a ton of it anyway.

We all need a machine that address the level and
types of hunting we do. It only took an hour or two
for me to figger out I was Tesoro man. It was a
natural thing for me. Others have to put 100 hours in.
Others just give up because they don't click with it.

Believe me, it's not the machine. Tesoro metal Detectors
do not meat everyone's needs. But it is for sure not
simply a guessing game. Not when you hear what I
hear.

Happy Hunting,

..spend more time with the V to learn it, but the bottom line is use what you feel is more comfortable for YOU and the conditions you hunt in. If you continue to use the V while in the back of your mind you want an X70, then I don't think you will open your mind up to learn the V and I don't think hunting would be that much fun.

I have been in that boat several times. Get what you want...you can always sell it later if it's not what you thought. I do know a V is next on my list. There are so many good things about it, I have to get one !

Good luck in whatever you decide....remember, it's YOUR decision.

All machines take a bit of learning. It gets easier after you've mastered one or two. The Vaq is an excellent beep and dig machine and with proper manipulation of the discrimination and learning the sounds of good targets versus trash, it'll hold its own with most. Definitely a deeper, more capable machine than the ace. Tid is nice, but mostly a crutch in my opinion and is partly responsible for the goodies left when an area is supposedly "hunted out". I don't need a machine's guess on a target I'm going to dig anyway, either. My two bits.

thank you one and all for your responces to my whinges.i will try not grizzle any more about md to you all .it's going to be a long learning trip ahead. bye. blowfly. hh

Well I run a X-Terra 70 and also a Vaquero. I bought the Vaquero because I felt I was missing targets with my X-Terra. You know only digging "the good" signals? I like using both, and having both. The Vaquero is deeper right out of the box. The X-Terra is a coin hunters dream. I use the Vaquero in tot lots, and on old home lots. I like my X-Terra at school yards? I dunno The more I use the V the more I like it, Beale.

HI GUYS----My .02 worth!! It took me 51 detectors & several years, with different coils on some of those detectors to get to the place I am today (detector wise). And we sure ain't rich (except rich in The Lord)! We're just M.D.ing nuts. Anyway,--We ended up with 8 different detectors that we consider (at this point in time) to be the best FOR US (my wife & I)-for the conditions, sites, etc.-everything taken into consideration-that we hunt in. But you know what?? Not a BLAMED ONE of those detectors is perfect!!! Surprise, surprise!!! ha The V and the X70 are in those 8 detectors and they are both EXCELLENT detectors-just not alike. If you don't like the thing (no matter what machine it is) you're not going to do as good with it. Someone once said "buy a detector to suit your personality"--now there's the statement of a wise man. I've had a couple of high end detectors along the way that I would have wrapped around a telephone pole (if the pole was handy)-couldn't stand them. Whatever one you decide on--give it some time and give it a fair chance. When you learn the machine--sometimes it can be a "different animal" than you initially thought it was. All this is just my opinion. Take care, Del

thanks tabdog ,beale and del for your imput. i went out this morning with the vaquero and tried different things that i've read lately on the forums. it was agood hunt, not agreat hunt ,but better than the ace . found targets in places that i have been over many times with the ace. like you all have said in one form or another, the five "p's",preperation and planning, prevents pisspoor performance.i'll get better with it . bye bye blowfly hh
