The big wind last night was a disappointment. It switched from a good N wind to a medium NE by sunup...Which means Chicago and OBN got hammered all night by some real big surf! I mapquested some inland water and figured out a sheltered spot. I was in there at 8:30..I tried an 'external diaper' arrangement on my waders. My Wife had carelessly left a towel folded neatly in the towel drawer, so I grabbed it up along with some plastic bags and some advil...When I got to the spot and wadered up, I tucked that towel down in the crotch of my waders, and pulled the plastic bags up over each leg to complete the process.. It was 28 degrees, the shaft of my scoop got all icy real quick, but I was hitting...after 3hrs, both my hands were froze into claws, I was wearing neoprene gloves but still... So I waded back over to Rosie and dumped trash and coins and fired her up to thaw out...The agony that awaits thawing frozen hands is indeed a special kind of pain! It hurts clear up to the elbows! I went back out for another 2hrs and called it quits when the wind switched again out of the NW and blew me off the spot....I think this medallion is a fake, its not marked, sort of passes the 10k acid, but not by much, to be on the safe side, I'll take it into the 'We buy Gold' place and let them tell me for sure! (I found one similar a few years back stamped '14k' that was a fake) Got 4 wheaties and this mess...got to thinking, I have a pair of FroggTogg pants around here someplace I should find them and wear inside my waders from now on! The 'external diaper' kept my crotch dry, but both my legs got wet!

It is:The Serenity Prayer.

God grant me the serenity To accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can; And wisdom to know the difference.

Way to go Mud! The pain one endures in the quest of gold! Mine pain comes tomorrow trying my new hotspot! Supposedly untouched virgin area with 100 years worth of gold and coins. I can hardly wait. I am thinking about bringing a wheelbarrow to haul off all the goodies. My luck, it will be full of bottle caps! I will post all the rescued loot tomorrow!

Way to tuff it out Mud! I was hoping for a picture of you in the diaper, LOL! Was thinking of you when I saw those waves rolling into Chicago - thought for sure they'd make some nice cuts for you over your way.
HH Pal

I went to check out the beaches this am looking for a big cut...it seems the waves did more piling on the sand that taking it away, just what I feared would happen when the wind shifted..I spent over an hour driving around from pier to pier glassing up and down the coast looking for a blowout....we did get some big waves though, the second highest on record in fact, but I know this stretch so well now, that I knew it would be a waste of time...so I went clad stabbing at a High School instead!...got 120 coins for $18.40..feet got soaked from the frost, but at least the rest of me stayed dry this time, and I made enough loot to keep me in the game a bit...
Mud

ps, hope you find something good and goldy this weekend Rainy!...hope yer boat dont float away on ya!

Nice job on the clad stabbing! I went to this secret hot spot and only found about $3 in clad. Very little junk at this spot. Water temp was 42 degrees. I was in the water for about 3 hours from knee deep to chest deep. I had plenty of layers under my light weight waders and didn't even get cold, well at leas not freezing cold. I was on a sandbar in a back bay with very little wind. I anchored that boat really well and kept checking over my shoulder! You just never know what a spot is gonna hold unless you give it a try. Well back to Google satellite!

Thanks for that story Rainy. What do you use on your hands in those conditions? I've got neoprene gloves but am usually up to my elbows in the water and the arms get cold.

Topside I wear a short sleeve t-shirt, covered by a heavier long sleeve shirt, covered by a hooded sweatshirt, covered by a lightweight wind breaker. For gloves I use cheap neoprene fishing gloves. They don't fight tight but my hands have not gotten cold. It seems like that with all the layers, even though your arms get wet, the layers trap your body heat. The light weight wind breaker seems to make a big difference. Not sure why, but it is a night and day difference without it. Seems as if the arms stay warm the hands do also.

Rainyday101, like you I start with a short sleeve t-shirt, then my wet suit jacket, covered by a heavier long sleeve shirt, then a hoodie on windy days, covered by a light weight wind breaker. I agree that the windbreaker makes a big difference. The wet suit top traps a layer of water on my arms that quickly warms up. On mild days I wear neoprene fishing gloves but for colder days I use three finger diving mitts. The mitts take some getting used to but are very warm. I have lighter weight waders but on the coldest days I wear heavier neoprene waders. It's good to stay warm.

Syd, I gotta agree with you. Staying warm makes the hunt pleasurable. When I a warm, I could stay in the water all day. The only thing I different this time of year is avoid rivers. When the water is cold, to many things can go wrong will quick in a river.

Me thinks your crazy!! BRRRRR, I put up my water hunting gear last month! Nice finds anyway Mud
