Hello all, found this over the weekend, didn't think too much of it until I cleaned it up. It looks like a face for a lock. I think it reads 'Post Office U.S. America General 1798'. The 's' in Post looks more like a 'f' but Post Office makes sense. Is the 1798 a patent date or was really from 1798 ? Any help would be appreciated. Sorry the picture isn't too clear I think I enlarged it too much.
Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,
In colonial script the "s" always looks like an "f." Don't know why, but every colonial period doc I've read has this... you just get used to it.

1798 was the year Adams signed the Alien and Sedition Acts to silence opposition from Jefferson and his ilk, and to get rid of those pesky French immigrants. Jefferson and Madison answered in the VA and KY Resolutions saying states didn't have to listen to Congress if Congress misbehaved.... and one thing led to another and before you knew it we were squaring off at Ft. Sumter, SC. Jump ahead another century or so and here we all are digging this stuff up for fun. Cool, huh.

Charlie, I emailed a guy that deals with old locks and he said that he'd never seen anything like it (whatever that means). From info that I received I think that it is pre 1850, possibly the date stamp of 1798 is correct.
