not an expert either. Perhaps someone has an idea of what I did wrong.
I was at a lake yesterday and was detecting in shallow water with explorer. When I put the coil in the water, the machine made no end of, I can only call them burps --low sounding signals. They would taper off in some places but increase in others.
When I took the coil out of the water, all of these signals stopped. I dropperd the sensitivity to 10, Increased the iron mask.Nothing seemed to make much difference.
I do not use the explorer in the water[ in fact this is the first time] so I haven't noticed this before. On land it is as stable as a rock.
It was windy yesterday. Could the waves have anything to do with it?
Thanks in advance

When trying to program in the learn mode. I start from all dark screen...sensitivity low on clean ground. When I check the "accept" button on the screen and begin to scan the coil over the coins in the computer invariably starts to "sing" to me and I get "accept" squares all over the screen...small but they are there non the less.
So I move to a new location away from interference, retune to a set of freqs with no interference and over clean ground and low sensitivity same thing happens. By the time I am done the screen looks like swiss cheese with white "holes" in it all over the place.

i think its better to start with a clear, rather than black screen. Then, if you have to, reject the items you DONT want. And only use this when you consistently come across the same junk /unwanted target(s) in that particular area. otherwise you will be missing lots of good stuff!

to set it up on a table turn the sens. down real low and then do a noise cancell go into learn mode. Pass each coin slowly to the center till it registers a signal. this will give you a clean patteren. One thing you will miss coins using this. and you will never be able to maintain a threshold in trasy areas and we know what that means. I hope this helps!!!!

Bill,
The best way to make a pattern with the learn mode is lay the detector on a table away from all metal. set the sensitivity as low as it will go, now do your learn pattern by taking all of your items you want to learn and go in and out a few times from the center of the coil( I used the Minelab label as my center, so I get the same place everytime) never accoss the coil as you will pick up the coin on the edge of the coil too and give a differnt spot on the screen.
When done turn up the sensitivity and you are ready to go. Make a great pattern for those that want them.

Thanks for the tips. I was using the owner manual advice to "learn" targets on the ground to simulate how the detector will operate in the field. Apparently the owners manual advice wasn't sound. Not to mention how difficult it is to find "Clean ground"! I think I have some good patterns now...thanx- Bill

Minelab has sent news letters out to the dealer with differnt tips, one was to recomend to run in the factory preset for the first 40 hours or so before changing any adjustments. This give a person the feel of the machine that will be the easist to use and understand. Another tip was when building a program, to turn down the sensitivity to 1 and go in and out with the items to be learned or rejected to the same spot in the center of the coils. This will make a clean pattern as the edges of the coil will also pick up the target and will give you another area on the screen.

Another trick is to use the X1 probe (if you have one) for setting up your patterns rather than the coil.
