Not a detecting find.

I've been hitting up the local pawn shop here in town, and picking up some foreign coins for my collection. This place gets so much merchandise, that they don't even know what they have. (They're one of those groups that goes out to hotels and buys peoples stuff). Well today I was looking through their big bowl of foreign coins and picking out some coins and then I saw it......an 1836 United States 2 1/2 dollar gold coin. I'd say I got about 50 coins for $40 including the gold coin. Low book value is $400. So I'd say I got it for less than a buck.:super: I got it home and weighed it, and it came out to weigh exactly what it's supposed to weigh. Maybe I'll get some pictures of it and put them on here. I do most of my Internet stuff on my kindle that's why I haven't posted pictures in a while. As far as detecting goes I've been out about 4 times this year with a few goodies found. January I found a war nickel, a barber dime and 3 Indians. I'll have some stuff at the meeting for this month. See you all there!'!'

Treasure is where you find it...........congratulations Nathan.............:clapping:

Andrew calling Nathan "Lucky" Now that right there is funny.:lmfao:

Some luck, mostly knowledge, recognizing a potential opportunity....priceless.

I love finds like that. I know a few of us that do the same thing. ;-). Good eye! HH, Nancy

I've gotten (4) 3 cent nickels, (3) capped bust dimes, (2) large cents, (2) shield nickels, (2) 2 cent pieces, an 1892 columbian exposition half, an 1806 draped bust 1/2 cent, a civil war era store card and some other tokens. These were all found in their FOREIGN bowl of coins. I've also found some pretty good old foreign silver.

Here's a few of the coins.

And a few more....All of these except for the $1 gold coin were found in the bowl of foreign coins at the pawn shop. Looks like they need to hire someone who knows something about coins. The dollar gold coin I got at the same place for $87.

That Confederate half is almost certainly a copy since only a few were made, what is on the obverse, a seated liberty or a mdse token maybe? You did very well on the rest of them though.............:clapping:

On the obverse there is a shield with a confederate flag above it. Underneath the shield it says "NULLA PATRIA AMICTAE FIDEI" then underneath that it reads CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA

With resources available on the internet, they could research all their coins if they wanted to take the time. Apparently they don't care or suspect that the coins are hot and want to turn them quickly. I imagine they make pretty good money on what they sell. Keep it up Nathan.

Doing research on the Confederate half. Too bad it is a counterfeit or made for something else. Man, that's still cool. HH, Nancy

It sounds like a Civil War reenactment souvenir Nathan but still a neat find.

It's a commemorative coin. Sometimes when you're not sure of what the coin is, I'm willing to take a chance on it at about 30-40 cents per penny weight. Excluding silver. They charge a little more for silver. Even then they're not sure what's silver and what isn't when it comes to foreign. I had a bag of foreign and the lady pulled out 5 coins she knew had silver in them. Too bad she missed the other 15 that contained silver. With foreign the silver content varies, I've seen it as low as .3000 silver, depending on the type of coin. It's just fun searching through the coins. I'm never really in search of anything particular, just stuff I find interesting. Gives me something to do, when the weather doesn't cooperate.

I looked up the civil war token that says J.M.Brunson. It's listed as an R6 which is very scarce. Estimated number of tokens in existence is 20-74.

 Some of those CW tokens are big money.

I scored again this morning. This time a 1781 GOLD 1/2 Guinea from Great Britain. Same place I got the other gold coin. It's been an unbelievable week so far!!!!!! Paid probably less than a buck for this coin also. Maybe I should have played that Powerball the other day? This coin is probably worth around $200.
