Any one have any tips or advice for locating and hunting areas in eastern NC. As you tell from my name (NewBee) I am still trying to learn the tricks of the trade, any help would be most appreciated. I have located some older properties but yet to attempt to gain permission to hunt, it gets a little hard to get away to hunt as much as I would like. I am on active duty in the Marines so NC isn't my native stomping ground. Thanks!!

First off, get a better screen name. No fellow Marine should have that as a name anywhere.

Go to the library or local book store and get books that have civil war maps in them. Use your outstanding navigating skills and locate the current modern property. Research who owns the property and get your story together why you want to dig up their property. It all comes down to knocking on doors and asking for permission. Do not dress like you are going to dig that day! I have a 3 out of 10 success rate which is not that bad. Try around the Kinston, Wilmington and Cape Fear areas.

Since you are a Marine, you are welcome to hunt with me anytime here in Virginia.

Thanks for the advice, and for the criticism on the name. Not that I need to explain, but the name was a gift just like the gift of a detector from my loving wife. She bought my detector and signed me up on this forum, anyway, your advice was helpful. I will be checking out the library very soon, also found an incredible website with tons of old maps so that is helping too. Semper Fi!
