Noreaster Coin Finds

COINHAWKER

New member
I went out to a local beach today. We had a lot of snow from the last Noreaster. With all the snow melting it seemed like a good idea to check areas that were buried in snow. It has been well over a week since the storm and I wasn't finding much in the low spots and sanded over cuts. There was a small area with some larger rocks pushed up against a wooden walkway along with gravel and sand.
Swung my Deus over it and picked up a nice signal. I found a 1870 large copper Spanish coin in great shape. Swung some more and found a small 1898 Hungarian can. Swung some more and found a small 1891 Austrian coin. I was very surprised at finding these old foreign coins. I wondered how did these get lost. Perhaps these were lost by foreign tourists from the 1800's or lost at sea. These coins were in exceptional condition. It made me wonder how they were so well preserved from being out at sea. Perhaps they were down in the hard pan with rocks protected from the saltwater. I also found a large iron disc with some fabric attached on both sides. It was the size of a silver dollar. It was sitting on top of the sand near where I found the old coins. I believe the disc was used on the bottom of older curtains for weights. Found one like this before at another beach. If anyone knows more about these discs, please share. I also found a few clad coins. Not bad for waiting so long after the big storm.

Wow ... that's a great day - congrats !

I have a good theory that may hold water for why these old foreign coins showed up on the beach. The coins were very clean.\, smooth with hardly any scratches. I suspect they were part of a club coin hunt on the beach earlier in the season. Others had similar experiences and came to the same conclusion in their situation.
