Looks like a hanger or a hook of some type... It says Line one: At Aug 28, 1877 Line 2: At Feb 1?, 1987

No other obvious writing... I tossed it aside at first as it looked like a bend piece of scrap... they I say the design in the dirt and got real excited when I saw the date! I've only found 3 memorial pennies and a crap load of iron... til this... I'm excited and hooked!!!

I just officially upgraded myself from Noobsauce, to "Hope for a Clue YET!"

It has been identified!

http://www.google.com/patents?id=X7NuAAAAEBAJ&pg=PP1&dq=Aug+28,+1877+hook&source=gbs_selected_pages&cad=0_1#PPP1,M1

Wow! I didn't know Google had a patent search. It pays to explore the "more" & "even more" tabs in Google. If you were in Disc mode, what did it register as?

What a great hook - and something you can use and display at the same time!

It registered as Zinc/1 Cent hopped back and forth, but a solid hit between those two... The patent dosument says that it is sheet metal...

And big thanks to Carol K at http://gometaldetecting.com/BB/ for making the patent search... I did not know the dates were reprsenting the patent date... but she did :)

Thanks all...

Sounds like it is Galvanized metal...will often show up as Zinc as it contains Zinc in the coating...great find, and display it with pride...I like the design in it...
Taught me a new one...I never knew Google had a patent search either...Great research on your part...
