I have the opportunity to buy the gold at what I would consider a good price (under 400) shipped. It looks like it's in perfect condition I feel like I got a great deal at $350 shipped.
At $350, and in very clean condition, you have a real value in-hand! If I would have come across that deal I would have snapped it up quickly just to have a top-quality 'back-up' I could use as a loaner-unit on some outings.

I would mostly be using this machine for coin shooting. I have pretty good ky soil that is low in minerals. I'm currently using a bounty hunter Time Ranger, don't laugh it finds coins. Is it a capable coin finding detector?
Yes, the FORS Gold, not the Gold +, operates at 15 kHz and shares the same coils with the FORS CoRe. They are basically the same detector with the exception that the CoRe has a Beach (COG) mode not found on the Gold. Does it come with only one search coil or more? Which coil is supplied with the FORS Gold you're getting?

Should I hold out for something' different?
I doubt that you'll find anything 'different' and also packing ample performance for $350! And Yes, the Bounty Hunter Time Ranger, like all metal detectors c an find coins. But I can guarantee you the Time Ranger, and most of the competitor's models out there on the market today, will not do what the CoRe and Gold, and other Nokta FORS series models, will do in highly trashy areas, especially those with iron debris. I use the 3-Tone Discriminate modes on all my units when I am hunting densely littered sites, be them an urban Coin Hunting location or out in more remote areas, where I prefer to be, engaging in serious Relic Hunting.
When targets are more dispersed and not serious interference, and if iron nails are the primary trash target offender, then I like to use the VCO enhanced 2-Tone Discriminate mode. The Gold is an exceptional Relic Hunting and Coin Hunting detector which, as obviously implied, it can serve well for Gold Nugget Hunting.

I'm anxious to get it and hit a few old spots I have to see if I can turn up some deeper coins.
Not all coins are really 'deep' and I feel 'depth of detection' is often over-played and harped upon. You are, however, going to find a lot of coins hunting the very same sites you have searched with the Time Ranger as there is a serious difference in the level of performance.

I noticed the depth read out gives some high numbers on some you tube videos leading me to think it's reading in millimeters or something. Can this be changed to inches?
No, my FORS CoRe and your coming FORS Gold do not have an ability to change over to Inches from Centimeters. Personally, it doesn't matter to me because there are too many variables that can effect the accuracy of a Coin Depth read-out. The main thing is to search, locate a target, then Pinpoint. Once accomplished, a good screwdriver and 15 to 60 seconds, if it's a tough one to deal with, and the target is out-of-the-ground anyway.
If you don't have the smaller
'OOR' coil, I suggest you put that on your shopping list as it is a must-have for hunting any trashy site or working in and around metal structures, debris, building rubble, etc.
