Noisy MXT

Help a new guy, what do people mean when they say the MXT is noisy?

Do a search on the MXT forum for "noisy". There are a lot of comments regarding the MXT being noisy. It's not a bad thing. Happy reading.

Those that have a tuner control to set the audio for a slight 'threshold' of sound have a smooth-sounding threshold audio. Some are a little warbly, but the MXT's is a bit 'scratchy' or 'sputtery' or whatever term one might use. It just isn't a smooth audio sound.

It doesn't mean the MXT doesn't work well, it is just that some folk's hearing or tolerance for what's heard, doesn't find this noisier threshold as pleasant.

Monte probably said it the best, sputtery sounding threshold. This really bother me for awhile, but no problem now. Great machine on gold, could be a little better on coins but not bad. Seems the coins come in at a lighter - softer sound, hence I don't watch the meter until I get a signal. My hearing not to great anyway. This is where a good set of headphones come to play for this machine. Anyway a great machine all around.

The MXT was my first ever metal detector. I have used if for two seasons and really like it. My only real complaint is that it just does not manage to make more time for me to go out and use it.

As far as being noisy, since this is the one I learned on, I find that I think of it as like your kids. If it is totally quiet I think something is wrong. I have learned to expect the slight sounds and am still learning when to dig it as an iffy signal or when to ignore it as noise.

If I set it up so that I do not get falsing I guess I do not really think it is noisy. That is the trick. You have to learn to listen to the faint sounds and decide when to dig.

When I got another brand detector I was very frustrated. It would be totally quiet or be unstable. I thought something was wrong with it. Finally, after a couple of months, someone told me that it really was in a silent search mode and it really was silent. Until it passed over a target. The dead quiet still bothers me. I was setting the sensitivity too high trying to hear some sounds. I find myself passing the coil near some known metal just to hear it beep so I know it is still working.
