noisy detector....need help

I have a cutlass II detector and I notice that when using it, after hunting for sometime, for some reason it just starts beeping on its own whether I am swinging it or not.
I have tried adjusting the sensitivity, but usually just shut it off and then back on again. It does this with a 7" dd coil. I also have an 8" concentric coil and so far I have not had this happen with that coil on it. I have tried it a several locations thinking that some sort of electrical interference is effecting it at certain locations.
Is it possible that the coil is bad? It does locate targets and when it does not act up, it is very quiet.
When it starts acting up, it beeps at a constant rhythm and not erratic like interference is taking place.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Felix

if, under the same circumstances, the DD coil is the only one with the problem then yes I would suspect the coil. According to what I read in your post you have tried lowering the sensitivity without success. Is this a coil that you have used for some time without a problem or is it a newly acquired coil?

Felix, I feel that Pap is on the right track here. I'm not an expert nor do I consider myself one. But a few years ago - more years than I care to remember, I had a similar problem. Sometimes when getting this noise I would tap the side of the coil against something and the beeping would stop for a while. One day one of my light bulbs lit up and I reached down and wiggled the cord where it entered the coil - beeping noise! Changed coils and defeated the problem. Dimesworth

Hey Pap,
I have only had this detector for about a month. I bought it used. It is in very good shape and shows no signs of abuse.
The extra (7"dd) coil was included in the deal with the detector.

I had a bad 8" coil with my Bandito II uMax. The detector had a couple of other issues, so I sent the detector in for a checkup, and they sent me back a different coil with the detector. Now thats service!!!!

Thanks for the responses guys,
I found out that the coil connector that screws on to the control box was not completely tightened.
It seemed to have some debris in the screw mechinism and was hard to turn and completely tighten.
I cleaned it out with alcohol and blew it out with an air hose.
Now it tightens just fine and is not loose.
Could this have been the problem?
I will try it out this weekend to see if it works ok or starts acting erratic again.
I'll let you know.
Thanks again,
Felix

You'll know as soon as you try it, but yes, little things like that can be the problem. One of my SSumax detectors started acting up one day a few minutes after starting out giving really strange beeps and pops - tested the battery - dead. Put in another battery same problem, I thought oh oh, then checked the second battery - essintially dead also. Third battery and everything was back to normal. Both poor batteries would function for a few minutes before the voltage dropped to where they caused the problem. Fortunately, that fix was simple. Hope yours is too.

Hi

Just wanted to add that the connector problem will probably have been the cause of the troubles. Had the same symptoms with BH and White's detectors.

When I first read your post, I thought that you were saying the coil was loose, not the connector. That could be it, if the connection was loose enough to stress the internal wires, or to cause the cable to connect and unconnect from its socket.
