Noise ?

Something that I discovered when hunting this weekend that really surprised me .... I have been surprised by the different tones that I am hearing with various headphones ......For the first time , I borrowed my partners Gray Ghost Ultimates ......The first thing I noticed was that they really gave a RAW tone to the signal .....I could really hear what was making up the tone in Spades !!....It was not smooth and muffled like I was hearing with my Koss phones .... I dont know about you guys , but when my Sensitivity and my Threshold are up a bit , when on a Saltwater beach , the ground can get pretty noisy ...... Then you have the people, and the waves , etc ...... One TREMENDOUSLY GREAT feature that I noticed using these phones was the built in compressor ......What a GREAT tool ....Not only did it lower the shock of a LOUD surface target , but it balanced out ALL the tones and dropped them down in decibles so that I could hear EVERYTHING that was going on , but at a much lower volume ..... You could still hear every nuance of the signal , but it was much lower in volume and much more balanced and much more clear !!...... I stood there for a minute in aw of what I was now hearing without the detector BLASTING in my ear all the time ...... Sometimes you want to run a ittle hot to get some depth .... I realize that everyone wants to have a quiet running machine as do I , but sometimes you need to run hotter to get down to some deep depths of those whispy, soft , sounding signals that are DEEEEEEEEEP .....You guys that run their machines this way know just what I am talking about ..... Thie built in compressor circuit allows you to run a LOT hotter ( noisier) , but it's tollerable in your ears because it's not ripping your head off and driving you crazy ...... Perhaps I'm preaching to the choir here, but I have never had such a revalation for my ears as I did hearing this ..... So the compressor / limiter circuit in these headphones not only quiets the peaks when you hit a surface target , but it balances ALL the signal and makes it extremely tollerable to listen to at extended periods of time ...... My partner said that a LONG TIME AGO , someone told him that the first major upgrade that you need for ANY metal detector should be a good set of headphones ....... This weekend , and this statement made a believer out of me !!....... Just so you know , I have 5 sets of headphones , and none of them are designed for detecting ...I am FLOORED by headphones that are built specifically for detecting ..... I'm NOT advocating for the Ultimates ...I merely meniton these because these are the ones that I was listening to at the time ....There are other companies out there that have built in compressor/ limiters in thier phones too ...... If you don't have a good set of phones , I can honestly say that you should consider buying a set BEFORE you even consider buying your next upgrade in purchasing a new coil !!..... It really DOES make a HUGE difference ......JIm

test that out more Jim, especially on deep targets. I have found the limiter your speaking of will kill off the deeper targets, something I dont want on the beach where depth is really important.

Id love to find a set of headphones that have the Rats earcup size and comfort but the noise blocking and tonal range/quality of the Black widows(I use those now). Inland hunting the sunray pro golds are my favorite.

Here is the mystery to me about Minelab. Why do they sell a very good detector like the Sovereign knowing that;

1. The switches will fail prematurely if not equipped with rubber boots.

2. That headphones if not equipped with a voltage/volume limiter will blast the ears of the user on large and/or shallow targets.

In my opinion the Sovereign should come with the boots and with sound limiting circuitry from the factory, a spare set of coil attachment hardware would be a nice touch also.

Oh and at the present price, but I guess if we buy the machine as is, at their price, why should they.

Is a top flight reputation for quality and customer satisfaction of any value? From what I have read, they do not have that now.

Other than that I am happy with mine so far.

Otlew,

I agree totally, especially when it comes to the rubber boots. I think it is a HUGE error to not install them stock from the factory. It is nearly impossible to find the boots except from a dealer for $25 or one other source for $3.25 each. Also, why would Minelab stop installing the v-clip on the sovereign rod? I love the Sovereign but sometimes wonder what goes on when it comes to making decisions about this detector.

Because it is a 15 year old machine. Unless they come out with a new Sov "witch i doubt". You get what you get. There is still a demand for them so why invest "as a company" resources?

Otlew - what do you mean the switches fail? What kind of boots are being spoken of???

Thanks critterhunter - I suppose I need to do this as this machine is toooo much money not too. I am in the electronics business so i might take a look also. i'll let everyone know if i find something.

Also thinking about the headphones. Yesterday on the maiden voyage I used my Calrad 15-135B phones. They have volume controls and i suppose were ok. I have nothing to compar to

Rdavisr,

Yes plz let us know if you find boots. I don't wanna have to pay $$$ plus shipping.

When i first got the Sunrays i was a bit concerned as to weather or not the limiter cut out on faint deeper targets too, ie reduced volume accross the board. They dont, on normal and faint targets you can't tell which mode your in and its only when a target reaches a certain volume it cuts in and stops the blast, on occasions i have used mine without checking the switch and it has moved while in the boot, or caught on my jacket hood and moved by accident, everything sounds normal but you soon know when its in the wrong position if you pass a shallow targed. The Greys are probably similar

rdavisr,

I found some boots at Electronic Parts Outlet (EPO) in the Webster/Clear Lake area, I bought the last four they had. PM me if you need more info, but I would call EPO before I made the drive.

110 E Medical Center Blvd
Webster, TX 77598
Neighborhood: Clear Lake
(281) 286-5510

Going north from Galveston on I-45 exit just past the new NASA Road over pass, turn right on Medical Center and just as you pass across the railroad tracks at HWY 3 they are on the immediate right. Its a quick turn in to their drive.

These are full boots, not the half-boots and they partially obscure the printing on the panel because of the diameter of threaded metal ring used to attach the boot. I found these after I bought the expensive half-boots, so I bought four as backups. They are made by a company named Philmore (LKG industries of Rockford Illinois) Taiwan made. Part No.30-1000, thread size is 1/4-40 NS.

Now here is the good part, they RETAIL for $2.07 a pair for a total expenditure of $4.28 plus of course tax. So anybody who can chase these down can save a few bucks. Heck spend big boys, buy two sets, and drop $12 with shipping :beers:

I found this on another forum, it may help

know the place well. it has been crazy at work this week but I plan on making it to another shop we use on the NW side also. EPO was on my list. We buy camera parts, relays, switches and such from them

I have been going to EPO off and on since 1992, when they had a smaller store across HWY 3. Time flies. There is another store across town named EPO but they are not affiliated with each other, In fact the one I mentioned I think is no longer Electronics Parts Outlet, they changed its name but kept the EPO letters.

They may have the boots back in, I bought mine a couple of months ago.
