Noise cancelling headphones

Ism

Well-known member
I have a pair by Creative Labs that were less than half the price of detecting headphones. I can't use them on my Vaquero without an in-line volume control (I don't have one...yet).
The difference is incredible with NC on as opposed to using them with NC off. It amplifies the signal as well as reducing outside noise. I just need a volume limiter.
The reason I seldom use headphones is because I cant hear my pin-pointer without removing at least one ear muff and most of my detecting these days is not for deep objects.
I did use them at the ocean with my TDI and noticed a marked difference in the ability to hear subtle changes in the threshold.
My question(s) for the guys that use the headphones designed for detecting...
Have others out there use NC headphones or tried them?
Do the specialized metal detecting headphones work in the same manner as NC headphones?

I've been using Koss QZ99 noise canceling headphones and love them for metal detecting. They have volume control. I can hear the pinpointer just barely with the headphones on, but I normally put a finger over the pinpointer's speaker hole and go by the vibration. Quieting the pinpointer draws less attention.

Ism, I had a problem hearing my pinpointer while using head phones, until I modified the pads. Using a sharp utility knife I cut out and removed the bottom of both ear pads. Now they are horse shoe shaped. Glued a strip of cloth over the cut ends. Not everybody would do that kind of surgery on their headphones but for me it solved the problem of taking one pad off my ear to hear the pinpointer.

Thanks for the replys to my question(s).

Its funny TVR, I am a lefty, so when I use my propointer I naturally cover the speaker opening with my thumb when its in my right hand. The problem with me is I cant seem to feel the vibrate very well. I wish it weren't the case, because I hate attracting attention with the pinpointer.

Jabbo, Thats a great idea, I think I will modify my current el cheapo NC headphones with your earmuff idea and a volume control. I have a few projects for this winter to keep me entertained now.

That's why I prefer pinpointers with a vibrate mode.
