No threshold on the Elite

Hi All

I have recently bought a second hand Sovereign Elite and found that I cannot set the threshold. It is audible for perhaps few seconds after I switch on and then goes silent, no matter where do I turn the knob. Doesn't matter if I change to all metal or not, it's still not audible. I keep the knob in pre set factory position, just to be on the safe side, but it is annoying not being able to hear anything. Otherwise everything is fine and signals from targets are loud and clear, yet in the back of my mind there is always a question as to what am I missing and what causes this silence. Has any of you experienced similar problems? Do you think that someone modified it into a permanent silent search machine? Any suggestions will be much appreciated

Actually I have tried another coil, also tornado 1000 - and observed no change..

Maybe the previos owner has been inside, there is an adjustable pot in there, also a jumper for silent threshold, i'll try to find the link as its a while ago, i think maybe Wildher may have more info

Most used Sovereign's have had some kind of mod.The good news most of these are an easy fix with the right information.The Sovereign will null if close to iron so try tuning the threshold outdoors.Does the threshold return after a while?. Good Luck Ron

Hi Ron,
no, the threshold is virtually non existent. It's on for a few seconds after the machine is switched on and then the Elite runs silently until it finds a target. I get good depth and stable operation but can't help thinking that I might achieve better results if I would be able to control the threshold. After all it's there for a reason
I'm also interested in what kered wrote above and will be grateful for more info.

The SS(silent search) is the jumper that may have been changed

The only problem is that I don't know how to fix it myself nor have I got access to any service point so unless someone would be willing to take me step by step through it, I won't be able to do anything..
Was such a mod offered? What exactly does it do and how does it affect performance? I know that one of the Sovereign trademarks is when threshold returns with a sound specific to the rejected metal, so with silent search option activated I am missing a whole lot of information. Am I also losing some depth and sensitivity?

Either they jumpered the silent search, moved the threshold pot, or you've got a bad thresxhold control. mark pot before trying to move it. if one on board does nothing return it to marked spot. control pot for threshold should be cleaned. look up pot cleaning on here.

if jumped into silent search it should still have threshold in all metal and threshold in disc if you turn the threshold up .

Hi blackships, I run my Sovereign in silent search but you WiLL have threshold if you turn the knob clockwise. Contact the person you bought it from and ask him if he adjusted the threshold pot??. Like the others said try different coil and headphones. Pull off the knob off and spray contact spray while turning it. Good Luck!! Walter
