No Skunk In My Lane Today! River Loot!

Had to head away from the oceanfront today...too painful down there. Enough to make a man

So Ina and Darren and me met up at 3:30 AM for a little trip to try some river hunting. It's a bit more work...I spent 5 hours in the water with the Excal submersed the whole time. The targets weren't exactly numerous, but they beat the daylights out of Virginia Beach at the moment. The Excal performed like a champ. In fact, all THREE OF THEM did! The recoveries were tough but do-able because of the "no waves" thing...that's cool, not having to fight the surf. This is still salt water, so the coins show it. And there was a lot more trash, but the goodies were there too.

We all spent much time in the water...starting well before dawn and going until well after. And though we all did well, Ina kicked both of our butts, scoring gold, silver AND diamonds. And ruby. The girl is on fire with that new Excal!

Here is my "nut"...I got an 18K gold men's band and a silver ring. Two of Ina's rings are in this post, before I cleaned them up. We'll get to those in another post...too many pics.

Closer shot of the 3 rings...the ruby and channel ring are FILTHY...wait until after ultrasonic cleaning!

Engraving in the 18K ring...

Not the best "strike", but visible. There's a date in it too...I'll leave that pic out. :)

And what do you suppose are the odds of THIS??? After about a 5 minute recovery operation and I finally pulled this up I was like

And it cleaned up nice too...925...I'll take it!

So all in all, a decent hunt. I like this river stuff. Now I want to try a fresh water swimmin' hole. Going to the Bahamas on a cruise next weekend. Unfortunately, not only will I miss what looks to be a GREAT detecting weekend HERE, but I also won't be taking my detector to the Bahamas either. We are going for my wife's 30th high school reunion and I am going to have to do the sightseeing and shopping thing. I've been there a dozen times in the Navy, before I ever detected. She's never been there, so now it's her turn. So you all try to save some for me, will ya??? :)

Mike, laughed my head off when I read the name on the ring. Hey, what type of clothing do you wear when your in the water? wet suit? dry suit?

Gary

Yeah, pretty wild huh?

As for what I wear, right now, swimming trunks...it's summer...the water's beautiful. Later on when it gets cold I have these one-piece waders:

Thanks Mike, as always, good hunting and thanks for the great advice. Just bought a nice wet suit on Ebay for $20.00. Cant beat it.

Gary

Actually, it's still salt water. The ocean feeds the bay and the bay feeds the river. But I want to do some fresh and I have an idea where to start. Not sure if it will happen this year or not, but maybe the research will.

I was wondering if someone might explain some of the lingo you experienced metal detectors use
like the "Lane" and others Please
Smile

Much of the lingo was coined by one of the forum legends around here, GraveDiggerMax. This has been asked before and answered, but what the heck?

The Lane - The surf lane. AKA the wet sand at low tide, also to include the shallow water.

The Mine - The deeper water, maybe knee deep to chest deep, also to include sandbars.

The Nut - The booty...the plunder...the day's catch...like a squirrel goes out and gets his "nut".

The Surf God - A little ambiguous. Poseidon, King Neptune, Davey Jones...the keepers of the booty. The powers that be that gives up the bling-bling.

Diggers - Any of young-to-midlin nubile lassies, generally narrow-waisted and ample-bootied with a little cleavage tossed in. Generally bikini-clad and posing with Max's big yellow scoop. Ostensibly to "help him dig" but in fact, serving as eye-candy for otherwise detecting-related posts. Often the only treasure IN the post, though we prefer posts with both Digger AND bling-bling.

Skunked - When a detecting outing proves fruitless.

Nitro - Usually referring to the appearance in one's scoop of a piece of costume jewelry, which upon first glance causes one's heart to skip a beat or perhaps stop beating altogether and has you reaching for "the nitro", as in heart attack, as in a heart-stopper. Only to discover after closer inspection the inscription "925" and "CZ" or worse yet, to view the plating peeling off of what you thought was a platinum ring with a 2 carat diamond in it.

Those are most of the main ones. There are more, but they escape me at the moment. Others will no doubt inform me I've left one or two out. Feel free to add them. Now you know. :)
