No Silver Today but Got a Couple Firsts

Well i didnt find any silver but got a couple firsts for me. First spot i went to is an old fairgrounds/ horse race track that dates to the 1860's and then was no longer used after about 1960. It has been hunted a lot, its currently a farm field. One guy i met has pulled over 200 silver coins from it himself from the 70's and 80's and another guy i know has found a few here and there since then. First target was the 1888 V Nickle. Its hard to see, the back is a complete crust and im afraid to start brushing on it. Targets are far and few between here and the machine runs pretty stable so i was running high manual sensitivity but i didnt manage to find anymore coins here. Its a big area and i hope to find some more targets there tomorrow. After that i stopped by a coworkers yard and pulled a little clad and one wheat, decided it was too trashy and went out to an old school house site that i have researched. Back in the late 1800's and early 1900's there were one room school houses every so many miles in the country. well this spot is on my 1881 and early 1900's platt maps but theres no sign of it now, its about a mile from my parents house that i grew up in. Im sure some old timers could tell me exactly where the school sat but i went ahead and tryed my luck anyhow judging where it probly was looking at the big old dead ash trees that were probly scattered around the schoolyard. Well first 2 targets were a IH and a wheat about a foot apart. Continued to hunt about a half hour and pulled another IH and 2 more wheats. No silver but im sure there is some there as i know it has not been detected much. The ground was pretty hard on them and i tried to clean them up a little with some dish soap but im afraid if i scrub too hard it will make them worse. Also let me tell you what, if you have never detected near an electric fence you should try it, lol. The old school site is on a corner and theres an electric fence bordering the pasture. I had my sensitivity set clear down to 15 semi auto at times and it really didnt seem to help. I did multiple noise cancels but it still falsed every 2 seconds or so when the fencer went off. even when i was a good 70 feet away from the fence. I still managed to hear some decent signals and pull the few i did. Anyways, im happy as this is my first IH cents and first v nickel of the mding career. Gonna try to hunt both places again tomorrow. Thanks for loooking, Sam

Totals were
1888 V Nickel
1890 IH and unreadable IH
1913d, 1928, 1938 and 1941d wheat pennies

Those finds are just as good as finding silver ... I'd take 'em any day ... congrats !

Nice finds.............. every bit as good as Silver........

Thanks guys, question tho, you guys have found many silver coins and many IH and wheats i know. Do you find that silver sinkes deeper faster? Like the same period finds, do the silver coins sink faster? I think they are heavier but i really dont know. I just want a little confidence that if i can find IH and Wheats at the old school sight that are only about 3-5 inches deep that i may be able to find some silver and hoping its not out of reach. Thanks

Nice finds Samuel! Anytime you can dip into the 1800's is a good day in my book. Personally, I haven't noticed an increase in depth when digging silver compared to other non-clad coins that I have dug in the same area. I dug a barber quarter last fall that was only about 3-4" down when all of the other coins were around 5-6". I always figure that if I'm digging wheats, and especially Indians, I know that the silver could be in the next swing....

Nice digs Samuel, im sure you'll find some silver in those area's your hunting, as far as the electric fence, i was hunting with a guy years ago not metal detecting but quail hunting along a farm field, he said he was going to relieve himself and all of a sudden he let out a scream apparently its not a good idea to peeee on an electric fence, it cut our hunt a little short needless to say , he was alright but a little sore if you know what i mean,
well good luck with your hunts and thanks for sharing the story and pics.

Nice part of hobby you will never run out of first finds and congrats as your on your way to getting some of them out of the way.

Still remember my first silver coin and gold ring and that was eons ago...

Didnt do so hot today, went back to the old fairgrounds field for over two hours and came away with nothing but trash. Yesterday the first target was the v nickel and then about 5 hours of hunting it and not a single other coin. Think a lot of them are way deep since its been farmed for so long. Then i went to an old country church sight that i got permission to detect. Guy i know has found some barber dimes and ih's here so i thought i would give it a try. I reminded myself why i hate hunting at old sights like this where the building apparently sat and decomposed or was torn down. The area was literred with iron. That rusty flakey iron that sounds just like a good coin hit, also the fescue pasture grass has clumps pretty think and hits so hard to swing low. I found nothing more then an old ladies broach pin. Kind of looks like gold but i highly doubt it is, no markings on it. Then i came home and thought what the heck, il give my front yard another go. Found a 54 wheatie and some junk. My yard is very trashy also. I need to figure out some old houses that dont have such trashy yards. Seems lots of people around this area, especially in the country dont seem to keep their yards the cleanest. O well, back to the parks on my lunch hours and after work the days this week. Hopefully i can find some more silver. HH everyone, Sam

Nice finds Samuel. Congratulations.

Nice job, Sam. Super cool on your couple of "firsts."

With your description of the old school houses every few miles, you must live not too far from Oklahoma (or perhaps a bordering state). It's the same way here...old schools every few miles...

And, no -- a silver dime should not "sink" faster than a copper penny of similar age; depth may vary some with coins of similar age in the same spot, but I don't think "sink rate" explains it...
