No nothing about metal detectors!!!!

MEV

New member
i decided to post a question on this forum because i want an impartial answer, if i go to garret forum well there going to tell me garret is better or whites forum or minelab.

So this is my question after months of research I'm undecided on this three metal detectors Mxt Pro , X terra 705 and Ace 250.

i have heard that Mxt Pro and Xterra 705 are great detectors, its like Coca Cola vs Pepsi , McDonald's vs Burger King, xBOX 360 vs Wii etc

I'm deciding to get mxt pro not because they have told me its better some had told me Xterra 705 is better but because I'm skeptical on the way Xterra 705 is built looks like made in china, only plastic , the box where the technology comes on x terra 705 is just to small and mxt pro has a bigger technology box its bigger, made of iron looks like a war tank.

maybe im wrong, i don't know , i just want a metal detector that works real well

i would of really want a response from people who has had both mxt pro and x terra 705.

Mxt pro or Xterra 705?

Company is excellent with customers and service..

Minelab detectors, are a long way's from being cheaply made. Looks can be deceiving.....

I have the older MXT amongst my other detectors
Made in USA and the learning curve is minimal.
No experience with the Exterra 705

Bigger and heavier is not always better, i can understand why you may think that way but trust me those smaller pakage units that are lighter weight and better balanced will hold thier own against any of the big box units in my opinion be it a garrett or minelab or fisher or Teknetics, or Tesoro the smallest units of all it seems.Best of luck to you in what ever you decide upon and welcome to the forums....Markmac

I've been using an MXT among others for several years now and have been well pleased with it. While it's not the only choice out there, it'll serve you quite well if you go that route IMHO.

Have you considered the Fisher/Teknetics lines. Certain models easily rival/surpass the two detectors you mentioned in my opinion. I have used my buddy's 705, and I own one of those built like a tank White's....nice machine.....but I still prefer my Omega.......for performance and less fatigue, especially after 6-8 hours of swinging.

I would check out a dealer, if possible, and see if you can test some of these units before you purchase.

I had a mxt pro, a bit heavy nice machine, my problem was that the controls on the box seem to get moved around while swinging and I had to keep looking down, I did dig a nickel at over a foot
at the beach in dry sand, I had a ace 350 nice machine very light, never played with xterra.

Hi Mev , I am not really answering your question about your particular detectors, so please forgive me. Maybe I should should butt out but my intention is well meant. Your reason for leaning toward the mxt seems a bit unsure and even based on what some of the others either have or don't have. I'm not so good at this as I have had no experience with any of the ones you mentioned, but I have been detecting for over 40 yrs and would simply suggest that you allow yourself just a little more time for some more research. You got all good honest opinions from the guys here, so surely there is plenty more you can to learn in order to have a better reason for your present choice than what you apear to have.Just my thoughts , and good luck. Charlie

Getting a more advanced detector for a beginner can be counter productive. Too many things to learn for a lot of people.
I know a few people who got higher end machines as their first detector and were ready to wrap them around trees before they either learned how to used them or parked them in the closet with the other unused toys.

I would suggest more of a turn on and beep/dig machine until you have had a chance to learn a few things about metal detecting.

Jerry

what is your build and age ?you need to be happy with a machine that you will swing for long periods and bending down to dig targets .it may be light or heavy and needs to suit your area where you plan to hunt.

Hello MEV,

I know I am new here, but I can say that I think Jerry is giving some good advice.

Here is why:

A good quality basic machine gets you in the groove, you get to see what all this is about, "and" you get to find some good stuff.

Once you see what this is all about, and get familiar with all the terms and functions you are better prepared to select a high end machine.

The nice basic machine you bought will "Never" be a waste of money, friends and family will love to give it a try and you just may bring another into the hobby.

I am betting nearly all of us have a back up machine, plus there are those times that a high end machine just isn't the ticket for the task at hand.

I have only owned Fishers, and of them all classic machines, but a very close friend has a Minelab and he swears by that machine.
.

I once went thru the exact same process as you and it also came down to needing to choose between the MXT and the XT-705 (XT-70 in my case). Both detectors are very similar in almost all respects, but what won me over to the XT-70 (705) was its weight: 1.4 lbs.lighter than the MXT, half as many batteries: 4 AA to the 8 AA's that the MXT requires and the XT-70 (705) has an adjustable volume control which the MXT doesn't have. The weight and battery issues were the biggies.

:usmc:

90% of a metal detector is the person behind it. Instead of spec'ing out machines, learn the theory first. It will put you at an advantage of being able to apply metal detecting theory or principles to the knobs, buttons, touch pads, and bells and whistles of a metal detector before you go cold turkey with lots of $$$ being held in your hand. There are guys out here that can produce just as much with old Tech. machines as with new.

Hope you will enjoy the dirt digging fever, Robert

Hello MEV, I say go with your gut feelings, there a lot of bias opinions on which metal detectors are better, and it can be confusing. I have metal detecting for 25 years and used Whites metal detectors for 11 of those years. I started with 6000 D, the 6000 D series 2, 6000 Di Pro, Eagle II, and finally end up with XLT all were very good detectors and found a lot nice things them. White's is a very good company. For the last 14 years I have been using Minelab metal detectors and I feel that in my particular area Minelab works better for me. I hope this helps you.

By the way I bought the ACE 250 for my Son for his birthday it is a neat little detector.

John

I'm not impartial

Dump the Ace-250. No ground balance so you are limited to mild to moderate ground, no way to turn the bell tone off.

Dump the Xterra 705, it is a poor performer in minerals, slow recovery speed, the tones sound like a kids toy and you'll go broke buying coils for it, and it will shut itself off every time it spins upside down in your lap when you kneel to recover a target, if your headphone plug doesn't short it out first. Oh, and poor/cheap quality paint jobs on the rods.

Get the MXT. Handles the minerals better, faster recovery speed, better audio, and all around proven performer.

My nickel.

[size=large]in my opinion the mxt is way better balanced than a lot of the lighter machines. in comparison to the minelab the mxt will satisfy you better. the minelabs seem to have a delay in responce. very notiable. the mxt is fast recovery and responce. i do have the problem of moving switches but it doesn't effect the findings. only the re-out. your wrist or sleeve will move the toggle from coin to relic if you don't pay attention. this can change the sounds and the id but not the findings. the idea is that it'll be the little things that will irritate you about the machines. does it leave you feeling you're missing targets. are you getting the depth you expect. some of these machines feel like you have a ten pound coil on the end of it. the whole thing may weigh less but it's not balanced. very important for those of us with shoulder problems. i can say i don't need a swingy thingy with either of my whites machines. and their service dept is the best. i hear mostly complaints on minelab's service. whites warranty goes with its machines. not the owner.
minelab still attaches strings to its. you really do need to find a multi- dealer and swing a few. go to the forums and read the problems folks have with their machines.

I will have to go with Jerry. I have saying for a new detector user. If I were to try to learn to fly an airplane, I probably would not start off trying to learn to fly a 747. I would start with a more simple machine until I learn the basics of metal detecting......Jack
