No Metal Detecting?

Yogi Bear

New member
Hello everyone,

I loaded up the truck and trailer last weekend. I wanted get out to visit a few new metal detecting areas.

I was surprised to find a sign posted in a small city park. "Metal Detecting Prohibited" (By the way, it's the only sign in the park.)

This was on a Saturday and City offices were closed. So, I unable to ask for authorization or to seek more information about the sign.

What happen! Did someone vandalized this park by metal detecting and leaving holes unfilled or not replacing the plug and taking the time do things right?

I don't know.

As always, Happy hunting!

Yep, that is the current wave across the country. Here in Austin, Texas we know it well. NO metal detecting in any of the over 200 parks and wildlife areas, NO metal detecting in any of the numerous County parks and wildlife areas and NO to the same in the State Parks. Our local MD Club has been fighting the powers at be for years now.

Look at the postive side of it, unless authorised, so there is still hope, goodluck with it.

Thanks! That right there is still hope. Maybe I can fine out why and let everyone know in few weeks or so... (Maybe they just want to sell me a permit to metal detect.) YB

I'm sorry to learn about that... They must have Dam good reason to keep the public off the public lands? After all the land was set aside for our use! Not to be locked up and posted no trespassing. Bet the bottom line is they want there cut of the action. So they can manage it the land better for everyone... In other words. Hire a guy to enforce the MD rules and buy him a new truck to ride around in write tickets and sell permits to MD public land. That how it works in my state. Then everything will be o.k.

Good luck to you and your Metal Detecting Club. I wish I could help ya some how... YB

I know what you mean. Most of the time I'm the only one in park that's not breaking the law... Most parks have so many signs saying NO it takes me about 15 min's or more to just read all the rules on posted on every tree in the park. Mean while crime is everywhere around me in the park as I metal detect my way around trying my best not to see the crime. LOL

Yeah somebody messed up big time. That's what happens when idiots are allowed to go detecting and leave property looking like a war zone. They screw it up for everyone else. I was hunting at a park one time where I am known and the park attendant came and got me and said he wanted to show me something. What he showed me was difficult to believe but there it was right in front of my eyes - holes a full two feet in diameter left by some terminal idiot that should never be allowed to own a detector. I helped the guy repair the holes as best we could. Digging a hole that size to recover a coin less than an inch in diameter is the height of stupidity and you can't fix stupid. It's brainless cruds like this that ruin it for all of us.

Hi Bill,

I know your right. "Ya can't fix stupid". I have been thinking about the problem. I bet a guy bought a detector at a big box store and headed straight to the park with pick and shovel to find Gold! There just to many big stores selling detectors and no one to help they with the right advice on how to use it.

You know, Garrett has everything for metal detecting, book, equipment, customer support, the best of everything, a real quality company with good people working to keep it that way. I wish more people would look before they leap. It hard to believe that people would miss all that great information.

I wonder how they get the idea to metal detect, without finding a few things out first. But, sure do everyday.

Yep Jack, it's a thorn in my side as well. I live up north of you in P'ville and when I started detecting in '99 I was shocked to find out it was prohibited in Austin, State and County parks. I talk to Scott H. on occasion and he keeps me updated on the progress, but frankly, the bureaucrats could care less if we get to enjoy ourselves. But on the bright side you can take your dog out and let him dump all over the parks with no worries!!!

Maybe another detector found the park to be a gold mine and put that sign up to trick everyone else! He might be out there cleaning up your silver halves right now!

Yeah these guys have visions of grandeur and think they're going to uncover some vast hidden pirate treasure in a city park or school ground. I watched a guy enter a park one time with enough tools hanging off him to excavate the Panama Canal, even a big machete and a full-sized shovel. I wondered what in the hell does he think he is looking for.

BigCat,

Nice to know you are in P'Ville. I am in AMDC as Scott is. Last meeting it was brought up that a suggestion was made to TPWD to offer a yearly permit to hunt state parks as a way for them to make extra income. Good for the TPWD I guess but that coupled with other park fees, gas, etc makes it a personal expenditure that overshadows the benefits? Supposed to be able to get a permit to be able to hunt Austin parks but that is a joke. One person says you don't need one, next person says you do need one and when you ask for one you are put on hold and NEVER get one.
