No longer a White guy

After lurking around this site and seeing my friends and you folks with some great beach finds, do to the use of Minelab Sovereign GT's and your expertise in their use, I traded in my MXT for a Sovereign GT.

My hunting is primarily the south coastal beaches of NC and after 6 months of not finding much over a 4" depth in the wet sand, and wanting to get into more of the wetter areas of the beach at low tides, I decided to see what the Sovereign GT was all about.

Now on to the learning process.

Won't be much of a learning process for beach hunting , Bob.

Sweep speed and sensitivity setting are about all you have to worry about. And DON'T get it wet!!!! Get the coil wet if you want, but not the box.

Keep it slow, and listen close.

You might want to get some boots for your switches. Dirt and sand will eat them up in short order. I got some from Rick the last time, and some from David@Dixie the other time. Other dealers should also have them.

I'm thinking it was a necessary trade off Max, after reviewing all the posts on this site.

Art, thanks for the advise. I've been looking at those switch covers and will get them soon. I'm a boat and motor tech here in NC and know the pain that salt water and sea air can inflict on electronics and wiring.

I do have it in the hip mount bag with the meter attached to the outside of the bag, and wear it around my neck and left arm to keep it up, but don't plan on wading out with it.

After swinging an mxt with a DD 1400 coil, this unit is a breeze to handle

Art those initials after your name, would they mean North West Ohio?

You might as well leave the meter off for beach hunting. It won't do you much good unless all you are looking for is coins.

If you want jewelry too, then just use it as a beep-dig machine in disc mode. The only iron it will hit on will be either very large or shaped just right, or rotted just right.

Thanks Art, I've heard the meter's are about useless for beach hunting, but it came with the package and thought I'd try it. My friend also has a Sovereign without a meter and just wanted some comparisons. I do believe you though.

Just make sure it will work, Bob. You don't want to go coinshooting some other time and find out that the meter is on the fritz.

The meter is bad about collecting condensation, and will go nuts from internal humidity. Another good reason to leave it off if you don't need it.

Just trying to let you know what to watch out for.

Play with it any way you want to as long as you keep dirt and moisture away from the critical parts.

Get a feel for it and have you some fun.
