No idea on this one...

Found near a cowboy camp.

Numbers seem to have been chiseled in. Don't think they were part of the original mold.

Any ideas as to what it might be? and if the number might actually be a date?

Thanks,

My guess, based on the shape and the square hole, is a mounting block for an elliptical leaf spring from a buggy, carriage, wagon seat, ect. At first I thought regular leaf spring mount but the axle slot and leaf spring slot would normally be crossways instead of running the same direction. But with elliptical springs the spring is sideways so both slots are inline with each other.
That is just a guess and if that's what it is it would be pretty small or just a spring mounted seat type.

Below is a leaf spring style(modern example pictured) as opposed to elliptical spring.

Since it looks to have a date on it, I am skeptical about my guess. From the pictures it looks pretty small, how big is it? What is it made of? Is it magnetic?

It is 1.5 inches long, 1.125 inches wide at the top and 1.25 inches wide at the bottom. It seems to be made of iron and is definitely magnetic. Would that be a reasonable size for what you're describing?

I don't know what the size would be for that item, I'm sure there would be varying sizes though. That was the only thing I could think of but I seriously doubt that's the ID. I bet the number is the weight in grains. Have you weighed it?
1868 grains = 4.2697oz
1868 grains = 121.044364 grams
1868 grains = 0.266857143 pounds

My calculation shows that a cube of steel 1.25 x 1.25 x 1.25 = .55 lbs, Your piece is missing nearly HALF of its density in missing material and would weigh approx HALF of my calculation or about 0.25 lbs. 1868 grains = 0.266857143 lbs.

I think it is a weight but I have no idea what it is for.
