answers "waynebo" received below about the ML Explorer "X" model are incorrect. I normally read the forums, keep my fingers off the keyboard and leave the questionable info in the hands of the "experts."
Facts about the differences of the X & XS models other than the chargers, nimh pack, coil stand (whoopee!) are these;
The X has no learn or edit mode, and the 6 "save" modes aren't there. There is no back light button and no auto noise cancel button.
Other than the above, the machines are identical.
The information is in the Minelab manual. Andy's book says different, but it is wrong. I kept reading different opinions & the manual stating differently and got a X model out of the warehouse just to see for myself. The ML User's manual is correct!

All "X" designations above should be changed to read "S". The info is on page 102 in the user's manual and is correct.

So it has the 4 audio functions and both deep and fast recovery? the online manual says no, havent looked at my hard copy.

S model features on top, XS features on bottom, from online manual at Minelabs site..differences in red

Jim,
The user saved settings, the response, and the audio are identical on both the S & XS models that I have in stock.
I didn't remember what the online manual said, but the manual furnished with the units state the above. Andy's book says the same thing you have in above post, but it isn't correct. The ONLY differences are as outlined in my original post.
Doesn't matter to me, but the answers below didn't sound like what I remembered, so I checked it out and sure enough, they were wrong.
GFTA,
Ty

Ty, on my page 103 shows the Explorer 'S' having the same User saved settings, Response, and Recovery as the 'XS' model. Interesting!!

When I looked in my hard copy manual, it doesnt even list those features on either model, so I dont know if that means they are the same, they changed the features after the release of the online manual, or what.. I guess if you have an S model and saw those features available, then they do have those features

Jim,
I'm sure Andy used the info available from ML for info material for his book. (It was written before the Explorer was marketed.) I checked another manual, and you are right in that it doesn't list the differences in the S/XS models. Don't have a copy of the online manual.
The "S" model I checked indicates that it has the same software as "XS" and was packed 12/99. So, the original "S" had the features listed in my original post. What, if anything, other than the manual has changed since then is questionable.
My thoughts on this matter is that some of the information posted about the "S" is apparently without basis of fact. It could mean the difference in someone getting an Explorer and not because they think the S & XS models differ much more than they actually do.
If one can "live without" the edit functions, the ability to save custom programs, the battery, battery chargers & coil stand, then the purchase of an S model will get him/her the same detector as the XS model.
Perhaps some dealer with a "later" S model would be kind enough to look at it and tell us what they find.
GFTA,
Ty

Finders had posted an unedited version, which was
downloaded by many of us.Since that time minelab
edited and posted the new version on their site.
