No Date Large Cent???

Jeff Calzarette

New member
This was found in a field that has produced large cents, spanish silver, 1/2 dime, etc. The picture shows two different coins found in this field one does not have a date or the word one cent on the back, it also has less stars. It weighs the same, is the same size and made of copper and it does not appear to have been tampered with. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

just the other day a friend of mine showed me a big penny with 84 on the front looked with a loop and did,not see any grind marks or scratches of any kind . i thought it was a 1848 with the 1 & the 8 ground down but it was not. will try and see if he can send a pic. the back was fine on his . but your is real neat to.

The one without the ONE CENT on the reverse also says "something STATUS OF AMERICA". Could be a token of some sort.

The one on the right the top of the head slopes difference too.

When I first went back and looked at coin #2, I thought it said STATUS also but the the more I look the more the U looks like an E. All of the letters look slightly shifted to the wreath when compared to coin #1.
And as 7centsworth said, the top of Libertys head looks different.
Very interesting find.

Hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like a "Young Head" type Matron Head Cent (1835 - 1839). The missing date and words are probably the result of a grease filled die. If grease gets into an area of the stamping dies, that area will not be reproduced on the coin until the grease is finally gone. This is a mint error and increases the value of the coin.

You might try showing it to a reputable coin dealer and see if it would be worth your time and money to have it authenticated and graded. There are also online coin forums that could be a big help with this.
