No Bermuda Pics for a While - Ocean Salt Sank My Underwater Camera:sadwalk:

I've owned an Olympus Stylus underwater camera for 18 months now and I take it on most of my hunts. The Stylus is submersible to 10 feet without a special housing and it is easy to carry in my pocket while surfhunting. Great pics and never a problem until yesterdays hunt when it leaked and destroyed itself. Upon closer inspection when I got back home I discovered that salt water had worked its way into the threads of the SS screws that hold the housing together and as more and more salt crystals formed in the threads the housing opened up enough to let water creep in and wreck the circuit board, BUMMER!
Understand that I rinse the camera with freshwater after every hunt at the same time that I rinse down the rest of my gear but apparently this was not enough to get the salt out of the threads. I'll buy another Stylus next week but this time I'll submerge the camera in a freshwater bath for a few hours after each hunt.

I did manage to snag a nice .925 celtic style ring and a 9k ladies ring with diamond chips but obviously no pics on that for a week or so.

Good Hunting to All,

in fresh water. In summer i was diving with camera in a fresh lake 5/6" ft deep and it stopped working. "the circuit board". I sent it back... under the warranty,
they fix it and it works great so far, so i guess its waterproof but you have to be very careful.... nothing perfect.

Pentax W30 and the first generation Pentax Wpi10......both cameras take a beating and no problems yet. The Pentax Wpi is 3 years old and has been beat to death but still performs well without leaks......I gave that one to J-man after I got the Pentax W30 which has also taken a good beating in the past year. They are waterproof to about 6 feet for 20 minutes. If I am not mistaken I think there is a time guide on the Olympus for submersion in water also. If you are carrying them around in your pocket and up to your chest in deep water this might be the problem. We both carry our cameras around our necks on a good lanyard. Soaking it in fresh water will not do the trick, just a good rinse with warm water is best.

so far so good......................but it takes 2 AA's and really likes them.....................

2 weeks ago, i was 199.00, i see now it is down to 164. beans

Bobbie, I have the Pentax W30 also my 3rd. one, the first got droped on asphalt, the second one the battery leaked ,but both times it was replaced no Question asked. The one I have now is about 6 months old and workes great. I carry mine in a shirt pocket with velcro closure and a lanyard around my neck with safty release in case of an emergency. It gets wet at times but not underwater for long periods of time. I love it. HH

Hey BDA,

Here's another solution. I just use my digital camera and put it in a waterproof case. I got mine from Aquapac. Check out their site at the link below. They have cases for just about anything you may take to the beach and don't want to get wet.

That's what I love about this forum, great people who are always willing to go out of their way to help others. I'm going to see if the camera is covered under warranty still and if it gets fixed great; if not then I'll get the newer version of the Olympus. The Olympus always took great pics and was extremely user friendly, so I want another one if this one is totally baffed. This time I'll get the underwater housing for another $100 which will eliminate the salt problem and allow me to take the camera down to 60 feet.

Once Again, Many Thanks,

BDA:cool:
