No Audio Signal In Ferrous Coin...When?

Under what circumstances does the Ferrous Coin separation not produce a target sound. I have read this in the manual but it did not explain why. What are your experiences with this occurring?
 
The only time I have seen this is when it is discriminating (nulling) over iron. I usually have a high trash combined mode on my soft key to check iffy targets in iron,hope that helps
