Wife and I got to Atlantic City for a couple of days. Ran into Surfdigger. Good talking with him again.
About the nitro ... took the blue tube Excal on this trip to get more time with it. Swinging the 10 inch coil over a target and it sounds like a medium deep bottle cap. Take a deep scoop in the wet sand and up comes this stud earring with what looks like about a 2 carat stone. It goes right into the pouch to look at more closely when back at the room. Back at the room, no markings and the setting is flaking. The stone doesn't look right, very little sparkle. The "we buy your gold" shop near where we were staying looks at the stone, tests it, and as expected says "CZ in a junk setting".
And the gold ... this morning, taking a walk on the board walk before heading home, my wife stops and says "right there". Points to a speck on the boardwalk and says "check that out". I pick up the smashed little earring setting and it looks right. Under magnification I can't see any markings. When we got home this evening, the gold tests say it is 14K; 1.1 grams of 14K.
Wife did well on the penny slots this trip. She ended enough ahead to pay for our meals, the road tolls and still has some play money left over.
Great couple of days of fun at Atlantic City!
Cheers,
