Nine Years Of Statistical Data

Next year is my 10th year metal detecting. I started with a Garrett and still use it today as my #1 coin hunting machine. I started with a GTA 500, then a Master Hunter CX, Freedom Ace Plus, GTI 1500 and a ACE 250. Over 90% of the coins below were found with a Garrett.

Just out of curiosity...how many of those coins have been made into rings?

Counted my first thousand and never looked back. Have to admit a good idea, but the novelty of counting them wore off...

Actually none. I work so darn hard fining those clad, that I cash it in and then buy coins for rings.

John, how do you compare the ACE 250 with the GTA 500 and other detectors?

Nice haul over the years, John! What a great hobby that pays dividends in so many ways!! Hope the next 9 years gets you double that. Happy New Year!!

Jerry, I only have about 3 hours on the ACE due to the frozen ground. But right off the bat I find it much more sensitive to coins, especially our one and two dollar coins. It belltones on the coins, even with incredible swinging speeds. I can't comment on depth, as I have now way of knowing, and air tests don't have too much merit to them, other then the fact that you know that the machine is turned on. I found the GTA 500 to be quite irratable on high sensitivity. The slightest touch of the coil on anything, and it would beep. I don't have that problem with the ACE. It is much more stable. Dollar for dollar value, you get a better machine with the ACE, but again, I can't comment on it's depth. But, probably 95% of the coins are found in the top 4-5 inches of ground. Just keep reading the comments others are posting on this machine. Oh..... before I forget, I traded my GTA 500 for the ACE, plus some coinrings. I have no regrets.

Dang John you're getting rich.

Me too. After a 100,000 it gets boring. I have no idea what my 40 some year total is. I have some pics of one-year finds where I wound up with 4000-6000 coins. In the old days you could scoop up a lot more than today. I hit a school in an old logging town many years ago that had never had a detector waved over it and I wound up with close to 500 coins. 300 were in the playgrond area. And a whole bunch of them were silver. Never see those days again.

I made the mistake of reading your totals to my wife !!! Now she wants to know what I've been doing with all the money I've been bringing in. She obviously doesn't understand all the expenses that this hobby incurs such as gas, another detector, probes, another detector, tumblers, another detector, etc.
Seriously though, you've inspired me to keep track for a year just to see what I come up with. What will I do with all the money plus all the money I'll be saving from quitting smoking (another New Year's resolution)??? I'll have all the totals here next year and I'll be looking forward to your updated list.
Happy New Year!!!

Actually, you may or may not want to think about it, but I'll bet you've got a rough idea.

I substituted one addiction for another.......darn good choice too I'm richer, healthier and still alive. Now when I kiss my wife , she says it's not like kissing an ashtray anymore.
Just curious, how much is a package of cigarettes? Here in Edmonton it costs about $10.00 a package. So, if you and you wife smoked a pack/day here, that is a mortgage payment on a house. It just goes to show how addicting those things are .

It could take a while I will post the results later.

Only it was drinking not smoking. It didn't happen over night but the last 5 years since I started detecting I have gradually cut down, and am now to the point where I really don't even like it. Considering it was something that once had me by the balls I'm happy to now be back into the real world, even if it seems to suck lots too.

Yeah I quit drinking anything 20 years ago and life has been boring as hell since. I was wild as a March hare. Nothing like getting drunk and being somebody.
