NiMH rechargables verses Alkaline for Explorer

I use NiMH rechargables rated at 1.2 volts per battery. Would my Explorer be happier using 1.5 volt alkaline batteries?
I just read this on the internet:
Nicad rechargeable batteries are 1.2 volts where
alkaline batteries are 1.5 volts. When you multiply this power shortage by 8 batteries you are starting with a power loss even when the batteries are fully charged. This will result in sluggish performance. Unless your brother is wasting too much time when he is pinpointing! When pinpointing, you have full audio, pinpointing is a battery draining function, and especially if he is not using battery saving headphones, this detector should give him great battery life.

the explorer works fine on 8 nimh AA's.. it has a voltage step-up circuit built in

Thanks Jim,
Wierd thing happened today, the batteries were half used up and the machine just decided to say they were low and shut down.
Don't know why. Never happened before. Hope it is not he beginning of a problem.

clean the contacts on your battery pack with a pencil eraser.. they get a black build up that cuts contact..

The contacts inside the Explorer housing and the ones on the battery cartridge? or just the housing contacts?
Jim,
I just want you to know that I really do appreciate your posts on the Minelab forum. You really are a pro at detecting. So am I but don't tell anybody
I'm hoping to drive to Millville, New Jersey in the not too distant future and do some serious detecting. Do you live very far from there?
