Nightmare case

Ever have a leg / foot cramp while wading ? Few years ago, I did. Lucky I was in a lake and not in surf at the ocean. I was in waders and got a foot cramp after digging with my scoop. Sucker wouldn't quit. Finally it worked out and it went away. Probably caused by using new muscles from not wading for a while, plus getting a little old. Anyway a few weeks later, telling a buddy about it at a bar. A guy overheard and gave us a good tip. Got a bad cramp, take a gulp of dill pickle juice. Nothing to lose, I tried it. For me it works and pretty fast too. Trouble is got to have it handy. So now before I go out Ill eat a pickle and take a sip of juice. Works for me, when I remember, but that's another problem.

My legs do cramp once in a while in waders. More and more often my toes both feet seem to cramp more often while water hunting. Usually not both at the same time. Pickle juice, I could try if if I want to BARF. LOL, not a pickle fan. :jump:

Pickle juice or cramps , got to pick the lesser of two Weevils.

Doctor told me to take a Magnesium supplement daily. 7 Years and only 3 or 4 cramps as opposed to 3 or 4 a week!
But with any supplement I always check with the Doc before taking it.
FYI: Magnesium also has an affect on blood pressure.

As a runner all my life doing marathons and combat runs in the military...... cramps normally come from dehydration for me. Sodium ...... could be a temporary relief from loss of fluids for dehydration...... but diet, and like WW said with magnesium is a long term fix.

Hi,everyone.
I've been told by many,Bananas for POTASSIUM.

Dehydration is a big cause, especially this time of year. Apple Cider Vinegar works also.

Bananas are high in Potassium and if your level is low you are more apt to get muscle cramps. Overuse and dehydration are the usual causes of muscle cramps

I used to get cramps all the time, starting eating bananas all the time the cramps got worse, leg, back, neck. I found out that some people get cramps as a reaction to eating bananas, stopped eating them cold turkey now no more cramps. I do miss eating bananas since I really loved them. I do eat dill pickles a lot so I should be ok forever.

so is that why I was waking up at 3am screaming because it felt like my calf muscle was tearing in half slowly!!!!! I was told it was from drinking too much water but I was eating 6 to 8 bananas a day trying that banana diet..

Do you have back problems, specifically L5 disc?
That presses on your sciatic nerve.
Now I get either a calf cramp or a hamstring cramp while sleeping that wakes me up, that can last 5 minutes. What helps when this happens is to pull your knee into your chest and try to relax. When the cramp lets up, stretch your muscle that was cramped and try to walk about. Then go back to bed.
If I wear neoprene chest waders and the water pressure squeezes them around my calf, good chance a cramp will happen.
Best thing I found is stretch your leg, foot and toe muscles before water hunting.

I have a broken back, and a plate in my neck. I Gold dredge when I can and had leg cramps so bad that I was up most of the night after a day of dredging. Try and put a bar of IVORY SOAP under your bottom sheet. I didn,t believe it my self but my cramps got so bad I was about to give up dredging. Now I can dredge all day, my back hurts like it dose all the time, but no leg cramps. If the cramps get bad enough you will try it. I did and am very glad I did. Hope it helps you like it did me, good luck. flintstone

Ill try that tip Sven. I've had those cramps while wading. Now I eat a dill and take a sip before going out. I swear it works (for me)

I bet no one tried the bar of soap. It works, most think it sound crazy, I did to but I tell you I though I was going to have to stop dredging till I tried it, don't have cramps any more. I am glad your pickle works for you. I still like a drink ever now and again.

Calf cramps are easy to stop, just pull up on or raise your toes. A Doc in my local paper said to drink tonic water before bed to lessen cramps while sleeping. I think there's something about the cold water that causes cramps, I've had them too when detecting in the fall with waders or wet suit.

Keep your legs warm, I've noticed that at least for me, my legs cramp worse when they are cold and it doesn't always have to be cold enough to be uncomfortable. Try wearing a little more insulation on the legs and feet. Water, even through waders, cools off the body many times faster than just air.

Morton lite salt is half potassium and half sodium. I sometimes work in hot outside conditions so started making a low cal koolaid (half sugar, half splenda) and adding 1.5 tsp per gallon Morton lite salt; effectively a "sports drink" without the high cost. Prefer the lemonade flavor since the tartness helps cover the salt. Any more salt and it becomes too noticeable. Dehydration is also a prime factor, at least for me. May be an allergy but too many bananas seem to give me muscle cramps...
