Night Vision Goggles

Someone brought up an interesting subject on another forum about hunting at night with night vision goggles. I have never worn or used night vision goggles but it sounds like an interesting concept in that you would almost be totally inconspicuous. I've hunted at night before on the beach but it is an eerie feeling seeing somebody vaguely come into view as you detect at night on a lonely stretch of beach. I've always tried to kid myself into thinking the guy should be more afraid of me then I am of him. But that's all I'm doing...kidding myself. Has anybody ever used night vision goggles to hunt with at night?

I think I would pass on that. Night Vision is a green on black or lesser green which means you can see pretty well but fine detail is kind of a gonner unless your really forking over some dough. You're still going to need a light to see your find and that means shutting off the NVO every time you want to look at the sand or in the scoop. I use a head lamp at night but I hunt with it off and only turn it on to see the item. A red lens can be helpful to not ruin you night eyes. You can actually see better in the dark without the light once your eyes adjust.

That's what my outfit is missing...
Metal detector - check
Headphones - check
Scoop - check
Trash and Treasure pouch - check
Dive booties - check

what else could make me look more like a dumbass???
Night Vision, sweet, that could quite possibly make me the nerdiest person on the beach.

I guess if there is gold in your pouch it doesn't really matter. I'm really just joking around with you guys.

I agree with Dig on this one. Even if you could find affordable ones they would be more trouble than help. When I was in the Navy I had two pair of these in my inventory and they were about $6000 each. And this was over 25 years ago. Dig is also right about using a red light as this will not mess with your night vision. It takes your eyes approximately 30 minutes to adjust to the dark and any white light will cause you to lose this. I have heard that since I left the service they have also come out with blue light that doesn't hurt your night vision either but have no personal experience with this. I would personally keep a good red lens flashlight handy to check targets. --Jerry

The idea is intriguing but when I hunt at night I don't even bother with a flashlight. It doesn't seem to take too much longer to retrieve objects and I usually have an idea of what I have by the feel and weight of it. It is kind of exciting knowing that you have a decent find in your pocket but not knowing all the details until you get in the car or home. I hope to experience much more of this during the summer when I plan on hitting the beaches often before sunrise and after sunset. HH!

Well if you ever get a chance to look though a pair be sure an look up at the sky, it will blow your mind on the number of stars you can see.
