night metal detecting

New member
i was just curious if any one does a lot of night metal detecting on the beach and is it advisable to go with a partner or do you go just go out alone?

I can't say i have detected on a beach at night but i have detected alone in the middle of nowhere and i mean - A REMOTE AREA.An Old grave i had to walk through in pitch black to get to the detecting site, i found it sort of creepy detecting in the dark ,infact- very creepy!. I have to say i didn't like it and have never done it since. This is the thing that freaked me out most though , as i was walking through the grave yard i heard foot steps behind me , as i turned round to see where the foot steps were coming from i saw an old man behind me dressed in grey / white walking a dog, honestly. Not a ghost! . Just some old guy walking his dog out at 1 am. It was a little nerve racking to say the least. I dare say detecting on a beach at night would be relaxing though.

I might get to the point where I will go at night, awful hard to wait till the weekend when you have the bug

Gee Cory, When I lived in Ft. Myers, Fla I wish I had a metal dector to walk the beach with. But my wife said I wasn't old enough to have one..Now I am living on Cape Cod, not the same..I can still see those gentlemen swinging their detectors up and down the beach..Nice memory..It's my time now!

If you detect at night, it is probably better to detect with a friend...I have gone out at night, but I live and detect in a fairly safe area...At night, when you're close to the ground, you hear things you do not hear during the bustle of the day...The night air keeps sounds to the ground, and with no traffic noise, you hear everything...I almost SH*T myself one night when 3 dear snuck up behind me hearing my detector making grunts...They are very curious creatures...I spun around, and they were like 5 feet behind me....Talk about near heart attack...I think I might have scared them as much as they scared me...I always dress in dark black loose fitting clothing...This keeps me out of sight for the most part...I carry a small LED light with me, and always have my Cell Phone with me, and always let someone know where I am...I have had some kids come up to me and ask what I was doing at 2:30 in the morning, but after a while, they go away...never have had anyone strange or threatening...Also at night on salt water beaches, wear good shoes and gloves...Jelly Fish and broken glass you know...Also, If the Police drive by, I always wave to them, and they have learned to expect me out at that time in the morning...

I do the majority of my beach detecting at night! Their are hardly any people around so you don't invade anyones personal space. I use a LED lightweight headlamp to verify targets, a buffalo tool (Sharpened digging blade and foot rest) for my safety, and a home made PVC sand scoop, it is light weight and robust. I have used mine for about 3yrs and it is holding up well. I detect at night because it is cooler as the days here get up to 39+ degrees centergrade and extreme humidity. My prospecting mate and I detect the Gold-fields at night occasionally just to get the time in on the ground. I have not been in a situation where I have needed to defend myself in 3-4yrs detecting beaches regulary (once or twice a week). We have multiple layers of black sand, and this seems to quieten down in the cool. I do detect in the daytime especially after Indy on the Gold Coast.(Surfers Paradise) here in OZ, but prefer to work at night. I do 12 to 14 hour shifts with a few coffee breaks in between. One night I found $79.55c, a platinum ring 6.5grams, a silver mans ring 6gr, a silver man's bracelet 41.1gr, a digital camera and a mobile phone. A good nights work. I get rid of my jewelery at markets and on ebay. God Bless, Nugget.

I have never found a Camera (I could use a new one...lol)...I have found an older flip phone (it had gotten wet and was useless)...I would say a great hunt there with the rings and all Nugget.

Happy Hunting,

LandStar

The camera was only down about 2" the LCD screen was cracked slightly, however the 256mb memory card was still good!:ausflag::detecting:

Cory Ive detected at night at daytona beach its great. an when there is a full moon u don't even need a flashlight. always nite hunt with a friend its safer. i also carry a gun just encase rather have one and not need it, well u know.

I am not a big advocate of handguns, but I can see where you might need one in Florida...I am personally in the league that would like to ban the sale of handguns by manufacturers to anyone other than law enforcement and Government agencies (In other words only those who really need them). I used to drink...quite a bit...I woke up one night while living in my Parents house after getting out of the Service...I had been out drinking and was sleeping it off on the couch. The Colt Python .357 Mag was on the stand next to the couch...I saw a light in the kitchen...I grabbed the handgun and tip-toed into the kitchen slowly...I saw someone in the dark, and put the barrel to the back of their head...it turned out to be my Dad getting a late night snack from the fridge...The next morning, I took all my handguns (5) to the Sheriff's Office and turned them over along with my License to carry concealed...I have not owned one since...if I hunt now, I use Black Powder Rifles, or Bow and Arrow...

Thanks for reading my raving...I think it helps me, and helps others see the light....

Here are my finds from tonight's hunt at Woods Field in Solvay, NY...I was out for about 2 hours....It was really dark...even had a rough go with my LED headlamp...Luckily it was not too cold...Cold enough to get the snot flowing, but not cold enough to need gloves for warmth.

I find a LOT of quarters here as the field hosts a Field Day each August.

Felt good to get out after 2 months of being locked in due to weather...
