night hunting

Buy a headlamp! Have your wits about you. Some locations just aren't suited to night hunting due to the 'critters' that come out at night. I've heard folks talk of being armed while detecting....better just to keep out of the situation! I night hunt quite a bit-more than I do in the day actually because of my schedule. I usually hunt tot lots at night because the digging is easy, surroundings are pretty open usually, and around here there are lights on till 11pm. Be ready for some folks that will want to know just what the heck you're doing! It'll be the women walking dogs or jogging at night that get the most freaked out-go figure. Expect to get a visit from the cops every so often. They may tell you to move on just because...do it without argument! There are plenty of places you can go if one doesn't pan out! Finally, have a PLAN of where you're going, stick to that plan, and make sure somebody knows that plan. Naturally that last part applies to many other ventures!

One more concern is for backfilling holes. What looks ok at night may look like crap in the day! Step back and check out your handiwork from several angles to get it the best it can be. In the mulch this is no big deal because, well, it's MULCH-just don't leave craters all over the place. I usually push it all back in the hole and stomp it down. I wear combat boots with panama soles because you'll find that you can do a lot of digging with your foot before ever bending down! Frequently I'm only bending down to pick up my target. Again, that's tot lots. Dirt will be different.

Hope that helps! :ninja:

Buy one of those LED lights that you either wear on your head or attach to your baseball cap and go for it!

Nah...scary is the first time you go predator hunting solo at night on foot only....in mountain lion country!

"They may tell you to move on just because...do it without argument"

Not a big fan of doing things .."just because". Dont argue, but question authority because you likely have the RIGHT to be there, in my experience with cops while detecting most of them don't care, but to leave just because is no good for me. Tell me why and I'll listen.
"Innocent until proven guilty" sound familiar?

Hunt with a buddy or two and carry extra batteries and insect repellant...Units with a night light built in are a plus...Great for those hot summer days when parks are crowded and cools off in the evening...Many parks and the like do not allow entrance after dusk due to vandalism among other things so check the rules...

Well cooking..put up an argument and see how it works out for you. I'm not a fan either, and some cops will listen, many won't and like to go on a power trip. Is it worth it? Only you can decide..

:usaflag:I picked up a baseball cap with two very powerful lights built right into the bill. It was like $15 at our local hardware store.

And I don't have to worry about police where I live. We have a county sheriff sub-station attached to the library in our little town of 600 souls. Thats about it.

Yes doing the right thing is worth it. Like I said in my post, don't argue, but don't bend over either.

Ah, gotcha.. Yes the world we live in nowadays!

Pyledriver - We don't have many mountain lions in Michigan, but one night coming out from a calling stand, just as I'm getting to the truck, I walked under a screech owl. He let me know he was there. THAT wakes ya back up.

Yeah, it can be quite fun calling at night! I don't do near as much of that as I used to now that I've lost so much land around here to development.. I still get out though every chance I can to hunt with my best friend-he has access to so much land it MORE than makes up for my local losses. We hunt pigs and predators more than anything else and there's always something special about hunting at night.

Now detecting in the city at night.. I feel less certain of what to expect of people than I do critters! Mountain lions included.

Expect the unexpected , don't get too focused where you loose focus with your surroundings, watch out for those late party goers, use mosquito repellent, take a buddy with you, try going out with some kind of moon light, stay away from really remote areas, take a good quality head light , let someone know where you'll be and what time to expect your return, get a concealed hand gun permit if you don't feel very comfortable trying unfamiliar locations.
HAPPY HUNTING
TRIPLE-SSS
