NICKLE

I find the Minelab Sovereign by far the best nickle finding detector I have ever used in 34 years of detecting. With the 180 meter they will read 144-145 and have a different tone that that of a pull tab.
The first year with the Sovereign I found more nickles than dimes which is odd, but then again I think everyone was disc out the nickles. The most in one day was 167 nickles and wonder if that wasn't were they had different coins thrown out for kids to find and when done people detected it and disc out the pull tabs and lost the nickles as there was a lot of them.
Like I say I find more nickles with the Sovereigns then I did with any other detector.

Also, whats your tolerance for digging trash/square tabs?

I'm hunting in old parks and beaches. One park has been hunted pretty good but there are Indian head Penny's that we have dug lots not much silver. So we want to try for nickles next. There has to be nickles if there is Indian heads.

Some ID detectors can do well on the older nickels co-located with iron but, they are a tough target. Most of the ones I have found are from digging bouncing signals in the nickel foil range and I have even dug them on signals that bounced from foil to tab with the detector unable to even come close to steadying out on a reading no matter how well the target was swept. There is just something about iron and nickels that does not mix! My suggestion if you are serious is to get a good single tone progressive disc detector such as the Cibola or Vaquero. Lower the disc into the mid to upper foil range and dig all smooth signals. I find far more nickels at older sites using this method than by relying on target ID.
