nickle question

Well-known member
On my new cz 3d in enhanced mode buffalo and jefferson nickles only hightone to about 3 inches and then they hit in the foil range...but if i switch to salt mode they hightone to 6-7 inches..if i try a v nickle it's the exact opposite...is this normal.

You know that half of the CZ nation is wanting to grab their CZs and find out don't you. My only tidbit of information is that zincs read high in enhanced and fall out in salt. Shallow signals in that range, in a modern location, are usually left behind. I will have to try this tomorrow, will let you know.

Thanks, Don

thanks for the link,it's strange..i went out today and dug hightone nickles at about 6 inches or so,anytime i got a pull tab or foil signal thats exactly what it was..works great on inground targets so i'm good with that..

On my 3D, nickles seem to high-tone much better in enhanced mode; particularly V's, Buffs, and older Jeffersons that previously spent many years underground. In salt mode they may high tone, but more often they will mid-tone right out of the nickel range. Check the link that tvr sent for an article titled: "Creating the CZ-3D for the Real World," which explains it pretty well. It would be interesting to hear from someone who has a Dankowski-tuned unit, if they could test it on older nickels that were buried for many years, and also those that never spent any time in the dirt; test them in both salt and enhanced modes and report the results.

So which mode do you run...salt or enhanced ?
Seems like an enhanced deep nickel signal could drop down a little when switching to salt mode....
As in zinc pennies reading high coin in enhanced and zinc in salt mode and maybe causing you to miss a few while in salt mode.

I don't like digging zincs, for that reason I use the "salt" mode. If I'm in an old area then I'll switch to enhanced and dig only the deep signals. But I don't get out as much as I used to and would like to sell my 3d. Keeping the 6a and two others. Will take $400 shipped to lower 48, don't use PayPal. Will take cashiers check.

Another concern could be Indian Head pennies....will they come in high tone in salt mode or read zinc.....
Can someone air test these and reply for us new to the cz's...better yet someone who has dug one in salt mode.

There is a whole range of desirable older coins that will usually hit in the ground as mid tone in salt mode but will hit with high tone in enhanced mode.

Old coins often hit differently in the air than when the undisturbed ground matrix is surrounding.

Significantly older coins in the ground will usually hit lower on the conductivity scale than their newer counterparts of the same metal.

Most in ground Indians will hit at zinc or lower in salt mode.

I only use CZ's in the enhanced or normal modes. If the situation arises to have to switch to salt mode I opt for a different detector.
