Nickels.

Anyone not pulling many nickels with the E-Trac? I think in the two months I've had it I've found like 3:confused: I upgraded from an Ace 250 and I was always pulling them with that. Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong?

Nickels to me on the e- trac don't always give a strong solid hit .
i don't have any trouble getting them,i just have to watch the numbers more.
there coming in 12-11,through 12-13 for me.
hope this helps.

I find a lot of nickels. They do vary a lot in the signal they give especially when deep where they can vary a lot. Shallower ones give a consistent sound/number readout. Deeper ones will hit anywhere from 09-13 to 20-13 but usually they like to stay lower on the FE number on repeated passes. Hope that helps. There's plenty of them out there to find.

nickels lower tone than most clad but is repeatable

Maybe I'm just not swinging over them. I dig everything so I know I'm not missing things. I'll chalk it up to bad luck.

They come in spurts for me. I always dig shallow nickel numbers and they usually come in at 12-13, . Had a shallow 12-14 today and got 1942 war nickel? A few feet away got a deeper 12-37 reading and was surprised when I dug another war nickel (1943). Dug another 1942 war nickel this week that came in at at 12-29 (was caked with black gunk). Today ended up with 6 nickels. Some pulltabs come in at 12-13 too. If you're digging everything your just not passing over any.

I could NEVER find em with my x-70 but with my etrac I find em almost every hunt, no necessarily buffalo's or older, but I find a lot of 1940-50's nickels
One thing that helped a lot was if your using the coin mode, edit it and open up the area around nickels, I'd say out of every 10 nickels I dig MAYBE one hits at 12-12, that it in a perfect world, old nickels rarely ever hit there for me. I bet your passing them up

I find more now then ever before with the Etrac

Like Randy said. Some pull tabs come right at that nickel range. Beavertails do too swinging one way, then at the 90 they usually read a 10. I've had shotgun shell butts read nickel and also the old (pre-1940) bottle caps read nickel (though the Fe is really high 20's). Sometimes the sound of a true nickel is just a little more solid. Also; let's say you're finding most coins in the 4-5" range and you get a nickel sound and reading that is like 8" - for me it's usually a beavertail at 3".

I think you have to anaylze where your at and how much time your going to devote to digging. If your in a park thats been used for a century or more and are finding lots of tabs and beavertails you'll do a lot of digging looking for nickels. If you at a homesite/farmsite you'll just have to dig.

Ive found a few Buffs and V nickles. What i do is dig only the good 12-13 signals and leave the others "mostly pull tabs" behind. Nickles tend to bounce a bit due to corrosion.

I don't usually get a lot of Nickel's either - but I usually get them when I'm watching the lower numbers more closely because I'm at a site that could have some gold jewelry.
If it's a ... solid - crossed from two directions - no bounce - FE - 12 ( or close to it ) CO 12 to 16 - just dig it. Most Nickels seem to come in either CO 13 or 14 .
Some times it's a Pop Top - but if it's a good solid signal - it's usually a Nickel.

I dug on these numbers yesterday at an old high school ( good site for lost gold class rings and other jewelry) and dug (31) coins total - (11) were Nickels.

CS,

I've had exactly the opposite situation. I went from an Ace 250 to E-Trac last year. Since then, my nickel finds have gone from 2.2% of my coins with the Ace to 7.0% with the E-Trac. I still dig a lot of beaver tails, but I think it is a lot easier to tell a nickel with the E-Trac. I had never found a Buffalo or V-nickel before I got the E-Trac, now I find one for every 16 nickels I dig. Most hit right at 12-13 or 13-13, but the other day I dug a V nickel at 8" that was hitting around 12-18. That was a fun one to dig.

If there is a lot of trash in the ground, it can get tiresome digging everything in that range. But hang in there, I think with practice you will get a good handle on it.

HH,

Bruce

Here's a tip - before I leave the door to hunt, I always put a nickel in my shoe to help remind me of the tone. When I hit a suspected nickel, I'll often pass my coil over my shoe to double check.
