Nickels

Last December a fellow member got a great discussion going on nickels. Since then I have been working more on my nickel count and it has gone up. It

Hi Idaho,
I also find that the nickles ID is pretty dang accurate on the E. I have not been using the E for very long but am surprised that the numbers hit the 5 cent so accurately. On the Ex II I was using I would hardly ever look at the numbers just use the sound and look at the cursor but the numbers are easy with the E trac and identifying the nickels from the tabs has so far been correct. In fact I have not yet dug a pull tab thinking it was a nickle. On the other hand separating the high copper penny from the silver dime has been more trying as they ID very closely in number and cursor now than on the EX II. This makes me have to pay more attention to the sound on the two coins and I have dug more penny's thinking they were silver dimes. I wonder if it would be possible to spread out the horizontal graphing if it would separate them better? oh well just a thought.
Good luck,

Or in my case Platinum lol

OK so whats the secret?

Every FE 12-13 CO 12-13 has been can slaw. The only nickles I have found was in the same hole as other coins.

nickels always come in for me a good 12-12, never move. pull tabs the numbers bounce around and move up and down 1 to 2 on both ends.

My pattern is very tight in the nickle area..nickles under 6 inches deep bang loud and clear..The deep ones dont hit perfect dometimes in the pattern,But i jump into all metal and check those iffy,6 inches or deeper ones..I usually kill the nickles :)For some reason i like digging them too..maybe becuase most other folks dont bother..But I usually manage a few older ones.My junk to Good finds ratio is very high this year.90% of the time I can tell what im digging before I start.(ofcourse thats not true when i go looking for gold darn it!)

In just dug a 1987-D Nickel a few minutes ago at 2 inches and was a 12-13. All my older nickels are around 6+ inches and always read as 12-12. So, it the signal is less than 6 inches dig 12-13, 11-13, 13-13 numbers as well. HH...Jesse.

I find a lot of nickels too. 12/12 and 12/13 with a clean sound generally produce a coin but if there is a little scratchy quality to the sound it tends to be a folded beaver tail. I dig it anyway! I have dug buffs that read as high as co 16. And there was a recent 12/15 that fooled, so my rule is to dig all 12's except when there is lots of foil like near a fire pit and then the 12's down in the 01to 05 range get ignored and I know I may be walking past a great find, but jeez, doesn't every one know to use the trash can?:poke: Terry in San diego

I second all you guys' post on nickels. I really love digging the nickels. They read very consistant for me, but I have to tell you. The first V-Nickel I ever found gave a 12-10/11 reading. When I uncovered it a .22 short casing was in the hole to. Do realize how many .22 shorts I've dug since? Those darn things read 12/12/13 one way but always seem to go to 12/08, 12/09, 12/10 when 90'd. At least that's been my experience. Thanks for the discussion.

I have 12 nickels so far this month, including 1866 and 1868 Shields, 4 V-nickels and the rest Buffalo's. THe deeper they are, the more the conductive number can vary; seen it range from 08 to 15.

Nickels hit more solid/harder and more consistent all the way around than the beaver tails. But I still get fooled occasionally because the depth meter was fooled.
