??Nickels & Gold Rings??

New member
Since owning my SE, I have noticed that my nickel and gold ring counts have decreased dramatically from when I had my DFX. I know that this is mostly likely because I have been focusing on learning the higher conductive targets and how they respond (fyi: my silver count is much higher than the DFX) So I decided this weekend that I would focus on those pecky pulltab signals (via Smartfind) to see what would turn up. Yesterday, I told myself that I would dig the these signals until I had 25 pull tabs. After 25 pull tabs, I had only 1 nickel, 0 rings and 0 unusual items. Today, I didn't bother counting the tabs until the end of the day. I ended up with 47 pull tabs - netting only 4 nickels, 0 rings, 3 buttons and 1 lapel pin. I think I'm going to continue this process until I get a better idea of how the SE reacts on these lower conductive targets.

Does anyone have any suggestions or comments?

Yes..post your results....ha ha

I know from switching from a MXT my ring count has dropped also. I think the minelabs are so much more accurate on their readings (than the 2 whites Ive used)it gets real easy to "skip" over pull tabs and go for coins. I personally don't want to think of all the goodies Ive missed cause i was just "SURE" it was a pulltabb/foil.

Its hard to do, but said many times here, DIG EVERYTHING!!

I've had my SE for only a short time (~ 27 hours of use)- my nickel and gold count is higher than normal. I found a list (helped a lot) of Ferrous/Conductivity readings for the SE, for all the stuff you'd want to find - except I couldn't tell you where (I printed out the table)! Maybe someone else can help there.
Most of the gold rings read Ferrous/7-12, Cond/0-09. Pull tabs vary, but are around 08/09. Of course, when the stuff is in the ground/sand, these readings will vary, so dig anything close.
Nickels are around 10/05, and I haven't mistaken one for a pulltab yet - maybe just lucky. Hang in there - it's a great machine.

What has worked for me:

*Use the SMART SCREEN
*Start with your normal DISCRIMINATION pattern.
*Use the EDIT mode to black out the region where nickels fall. This assumes that the nickel region is not already blacked out with your normal discrimination pattern.
*Set the SENSITIVITY to about 15 to keep the noise out of the picture
*Use the X1 probe
*Use the LEARN function
*Sweep a few nickels past the tip of the X1 probe to open a small window in the blacked out region. We do not want this region to be too large or you will dig more pull tabs . Note that nickels generally fall into a rather tight group. There are some exceptions.
*Save the pattern

You should note that there is a substantial number of pull tabs that do fall in the nickel range. There is not much that you can do about this fact.

Using this approach I find that my nickel finds actually outnumber my pull tab digs. Of course this assumes that there are a reasonable number of nickels present. You can't find them if they aren't there!!

Glenn
