Nickels and pull tabs

Guitarman

New member
I've had my M6 for a few weeks now and have used it probably 12 hours or so. I'm starting to really like it and hope to get one of the small coils soon.

I went out today to a local park and pulled out 13 quarters (all locked on at 83 VDI), 15 dimes (usually a 77-79 VDI), and a variety of pennies.

However, I didn't dig a single nickel! I basically ignored all of the 18-30 VDI numbers because I didn't want to dig a bunch of tabs. I'm not looking for rings, just coins.

My question is: How do you tell the pull tabs from the nickels? I dug a couple of pull tabs, both the beaver tails and the newer square kind the break off the can. They really sound off.

Is there a specific VDI # or sound I should look for?

Thanks!

it's generally under 20, I say 16 to 18,usually locks better than a pulltab. Place one on the ground where your about to hunt. People usually loose fewer nichels. Not sure why. I'm a M6 user also, zero disc full power works good for me. I believe use loose too much depth on the first preset on disc. HH

If you want nickels, you need to dig 18 to 20. Any higher is usually tab. I found that the M6 is a killer on nickels.

Also using an M6 and dug nickels between 14 to 22 almost always using a smaller coil in trashy and or mineralized, iron infested areas where VDI's can be skewed. I agree with Kenny that the M6 will hit nickels hard. HH Bill

Perfect this is the kind of guy you like to hunt the same park after he leaves! Wants to ignore RINGS and find nickels:super:

Like other VDI Whites a nickle is usually a little lower about 18-20...its not that the M6 don't find nickles...your just not digging them...

I don't have anything against rings, I just don't have time to dig every pulltab signal - and in parks here, they're everywhere.

Thanks for all the info everyone.

Direct quote>>>"I'm not looking for rings just coins". How about learning the different tones, and vdi numbers. I live in Chicago talk about trash! I have it down pretty good! I am sure you can too! I would not ignore those signals....maybe compromise...dig 1 out of 4. At least it gives you a chance. Think about this....10 nickels is only 50 cents ....so 100 nickels is only $5.00....so 1000 nickels only $50....one gold ring...one probably at least $50, even if small. Just a thought!

Help me out here...... I'm still not getting the ring vs. pull tab thing. If rings and pull tabs have the same or similar VDI #, then how do you know which signals to dig? By sound, or do the numbers tell you anything?

Keep in mind I'm basically just starting out, but I have noticed that pull tabs seem to "pop" with a strong sound. Coins on the other hand sound a bit smoother. How do rings fit into this equation?

Thanks.

I understand you don't have the time to dig tabs. Just dig 18 to 20 hits. You will eventually get a ring. There are many rings in that range.

I can not tell the difference between a pull tab and a gold ring by the sound with either my MXT or M6. I dug over 50 gold rings last year and to the best of my recollection just about everyone had a very clear sound or "Pop" as you mentioned. Most trash has a slightly broken sound and the VDI numbers can vary a lot. Whereas rings I have found vary in VDI readings very little with each pass of the coil and they give off a solid sound. I use a Bigfoot DD coil on my MXT and hunt in the relic mode. I find that the signal sound is much sharper and clear as apposed to the coin and jewelry mode with it's "Buzz" sound. It's true that one has to dig a lot of pull tabs to find gold rings but what a great feeling when you open the ground and see that beautiful gold metal shining back at you. After I found my first gold ring I was hooked or should I say "Addicted" to metal detecting. What a great hobby. By the way I found over 2000 nickels too.

I think put very simply that sums it up what Kenny said, so dig a percentage. As Treasure Mike said there is no feeling with detecting like seeing that gold! Especially comparing it to just finding a nickel! Gregg
