Nickel signal with the ace 250

why is it that almost all junk gives me a nickel signal? I keep digging them and I have only came up with 2 nickels, most of it is aluminum scraps.

But if the ace says it is a penny or a dime it always is. How does it work at telling you what is in the ground?

From copper cent on up I call that zone the "high coin" targets. These targets are most likely good ones. Not all are coins though. But copper and bronze buttons, silver rings and of course coins. But you will also find some trash like copper pipe pieces and aluminum.

But let's talk about that nickel. It's stuck smack dab in the middle of a lot of junk! Yes, aluminum pieces and square tabs hit right at nickel too. Oh crap do I dig that piece of trash? Yes! Lots of rings are in that zone! Not to mention from low foil to high tab. So what to do? Notch out everything but dimes and above? That's up to you. But you will be leaving all the jewelry in the ground for the rest of us. You might say "I don't have time to dig the trash" Well the time you have to hunt does make a difference in what you dig. The less time you have to hunt the more disc you use. If your hunting a site for 4 hours then dig most all the beeps. Especially if the site has potential. Here's what I do. I drop the wife and kids off at WalMart. I have like 45 minutes to hunt. I'm not going to dig no stinking trash! I'll dig only the high coins. Then when I have more time I'll go back and lower my disc and dig more targets. Unless I find sand! If I find sand I scoop every little beep even if I have only 10 minutes to hunt! It's all up to you in the end. When I do have the time and I start digging tabs and nickels - I know that someone running high discrimination has left me the shinny stuff. Sometimes it's just pull tabs - but sometimes it's not!

"Almost all junk gives me a nickel signal". I just can't agree with that statement. My favorite signal is the nickel signal. If it jumps around nickel and doesn't want to stop jumping, I don't dig it. A big wad of foil can hit on nickel. Most of my solid hits on nickel is a nickel, sq. tab, the metal band on a pencil eraser or a gold ring. Sq. tabs hits on nickel, but sometime jump up one notch above nickel. I can't describe it, but the sound of a gold hit on nickel is sweet.

I find lots of aluminum siding and aluminum nails hit in the high range. A zinc cent can be a screw cap, Indian head or any brass tokens, even a small silver ring. Scrap copper can hit on any notch in the high range.

I mainly MD old homes. Most of the time pull tabs aren't a problem. I dig it all except iron. If I dug iron I would tire too quickly. Consider where you are MD'ing and learn your detector on what it is telling you. You will see rusty iron in my finds. Unfortunately rusty iron can give me a deep cent signal. If a house where I am MD'ing is fairly free of trash and I get a signal that reads 6"to 8" and it jumps from iron to cent, it could be a deep wheat or Indian head cent. I dig those. If it is 2" to 4" I don't dig, because it is iron. If the area is trashy that system doesn't work. Too much trash masks the deep signal. This is the way my detector reacts in my soil here. It may not react the same in your soil. Learn your detector and the little subtle changes in the signal. They can tell you a lot. You will have to make adjustments at each different place you MD. Adjustments in both you and your detector on what you are looking to find.

All ID's by any detector are probable ID's ( based on conductivity ) not 100% accurate. When they come out with a detector that will ID 100% accurate then everyone will own one.
