Nickel search

Hi, Everyone--after 4 1/2 years of detecting, I've found a Morgan dollar, some silver halves, quarters, and dimes, and a couple of Indian cents, but never a Buffalo or V nickel! To remedy that, I've decided to go on a nickel hunt. I'm thinking of using the "Prospecting" program in hopes of getting the deeper signals that might be nickels. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

I found my first ever Buffalo last year (my sixth year hunting) with my Vision. In fact I was hunting with Larry IL that day. It was right about 5" deep in a wooded area, and it VDI'ed from 15 to 19. Oddly enough I found a Shield nickel in the same park a couple years earlier, but I still don't have a V nickel.

Since I have been using the V3 I've found more nickel's than ever and I've been at this hobby for 32 years. The V3 is a nickel magnet and I found my first V nickel this year. I use the Hi-Pro program and observe 3 things. First if the VDI is between 19 and 22. Second a solid tone. Third the analyze screen, you can tell if its a nickel by the size and shape of the wave. It will be nice and smooth with the 22.5 blue wave the highest. I would say I can tell 95% of the time if it is a nickel. Good luck.

After almost 10 years of detecting, I have only found 3 Buffalo nickels. The first was a few years back, but didn't count because it was used for target practice. The second & third came late last year with the V3. Oddly enough, I have found quite a few Liberty Head nickels over the same time period. You never know! They all come in with a VDI ranging from 18 for the Liberty Heads, 19 & 20 for Jeffersons. There are a few exceptions: The so-called war nickels come in anywhere from the low 20's to the mid 30's. It is the only coin that seems to have such a broad range. My only explanation is that the quality control was not good and the composition must vary widely.

Here is a little advice: Look for signals around 32 VDI. That is a spot that is discriminated out by many coin shooters, but it is also the VDI of the hard to find Flying Eagle Cent (1856-185:geek: and the early Indian Head "Fatties" (1859-1864). I love digging them at "hunted out" sites!!

Its kinda funny the way things happen.I bought my V last spring and V nickels were some of the first coins I found.I hunted an old school they were remodeling to use as an administration building.I got V nickels, wheats and gold rings but not a single silver coin at this site.I can tell you that the nickels I found VDI'ed quite a bit higher than I thought they would have in the ground.Once out of the ground, they VDI'ed close to modern nickels.Im also trying to find my first buffalo and indian head.

Might be worth noting if you're in mineralized soil? I am and I'm guessing Oregon is also (the home state of the original poster?)

All my signals ring higher on the V when deep. A Buff or a V at 6+ will ring in the mid 30's until it's out of the ground.

Thanks to everyone who replied, but no one has yet addressed my idea of using the "prospecting" program. Based on what I'm reading in the manual, that program would be more likely to register nickels. Am I right? For those of you who use it, is there anything I need to know about it before going on my quest for Buffalo?

Thanks again,

Mike

I would not use it, but you might like prospecting mode, give it a try. I would think it would be very sensitive to nickels, but also to all other flecks of foil and small targets in the lower VDI range. I think Prospecting would be very noisy in my ground and probably yours too. I have no problem finding nickels with the Hi Pro or Coin and Jewelry programs and finding a Buffalo nickel has more to do with getting your coil over one than what program you are using.

I agree with Larry on this one. If a Buffalo is there you will find it because it's just like finding any other nickel. I've found Buffalo's and V's no deeper than new nickels. My war nickels are a surprize when they come out of the ground. One day I dug 7 of them, location, location, location. I'm usually hunting in modified Hi Pro. Rob

Yep, I agree. Prospecting mode isn't going to help and the program would be way noisey and may even cause you to miss good signals in all the chatter.

Hunt in Hi-Pro. Dig deeper signals from 18-40 VDI (depending on your soil) that pinpoint strongest in 2.5 (blue). Nickels (and maybe some pull tabs ) will come.

Dint know if the two relate but i did as you are going to do with my xlt .Just dimes nickel quarters. The nickels seem to be the problem the spread that they come in on xlt vids from +11 to +23,so i decided instead of trying to grab everything witch would be +1 to +23 i rejected +1 to +15 it seems the spread was to big to actually to just get nickels but after i rejected those number accepted +15 to +24 rejected everything from +25 to+76 accepted +77 to +93, started picking up nickels pretty easy.i know the v3 is more advanced than xlt but when i run my mxt nickel always came in at 18 20 sometimes 16 18 20 if it was green or red from the soil.I just think the number spread is little to big on some of the machines.Don't know i guess food for thought. It seems when i go out iam trying to grab everything instead of concentrating on one thing, and going after that only. Its like i will never be back to this site better get it before someone else,in reality iam back to the same place the next day and nobody is around and the next day same thing.Like some of these site i hit all the time because they are so close, this summer iam going to try and select certain things to go after and see if improves my finds. But now since the winter storm hit i cant even find my car oh well.

>.i cant even find my car oh well<<

Try ALL METAL ;-)

Have tried that the xlt around here just doesn't want o grab nickels even if you lower or raise vid sensitivity or make other adjustments.Hunt with my brother in law he runs xlt not hot on nickels till you discriminate out the numbers i said. I think it causes the machine to be more focus. Thanks for the idea and the suggestion.i think i came up with a good program now .just need the weather to cooperate Storm hit last night.

Ye gads the V LOVES nickels.

Still no Buffs or Vs for me though.
