Nickel Question

PJ

Member
I have had my SE going on 2 years and have dug maybe 5 nickels. None of them were by themselves. I have "dropped" a nickel from time to time to see where and if it reads and how it sounds but I just can not find one. I have found plenty of wheaties and silver but never found a nickel. I travel quite a bit and detect in many states but they keep alluding me. Any suggestions.

One of the best places to learn the tone of nickels is on a beach. You are digging everything worth digging. Nickels are the one coin that sounds closest to pull tabs on MOST machines. They are like pennies for some people, they wouldnt bend over to pick them up if they were on top of the ground. Also being made of nickel to me they seem to change the deeper and older they are. The old ones are more bouncy and will hit to the lower right corner of the screen. Now the newer ones i can tell for the most part because they do tend to hit right there in the nickel spot with a solid sound all their own. You need to ensure your varitables are at 10 and i have my threshold tone at 8.

I've dug hundreds of nickels. The sound, to me, is very, very distinct - almost like when someone says my name in a crowded noisey room. The only thing that comes close is the little round piece of aluminum from a pull tab. All other pull tabs and aluminum pieces have a differnt tone and placement that doesn't catch my attention - which is why I rarely dig gold .

i don't use numbers, but on the smartfind screen, the square crosshair box hovers JUST on top of the lower edge of the screen. Once you learn to spot the placement and hear the sound, you should be able to call a nickel 50% of the time, or better. Partial beavertail-type pulltabs can fool you pretty easy, though.
The best method is just to dig everything, especially if it's deep, if your'e at a site that is producing. Good luck!

Usually the signal is good and the numbers are 9-7 4-6 or 10-5. Most if I see a 5 in conductive number...its a nickel.
Its usually bounces a tad bit but not much or its locked on. I find the smallest amount of nickels than anything else but still quite a few of them. Keep dropping those nickels especially a little older one...the newer ones are a bit harder to recognize but very findable. Keep it up and you wil find them.

Coins are like cops.....theres never a good one around with you want one!!!!

Thanks for all the info guys. I will try to put it to use and dig everything that is close to where you said they should be.

I do quite well with nickels with my XS and my new SE Pro. I agree with some of the other responses that the older, deep nickels seems to lock down in the lower right corner of the smart screen and don't bounce around too much. I usually dig them if they are halfway down the depth meter. I do get fooled every now and then by the old beaver tabs from the old pulltabs. But then nothing ventured, nothing gained.

You might try checking your digital on occassions until you learn them.... on my SE they will read 10 05.... like beaver tails. The old ones are the tricky ones. Check out Bobbysocks and my 3 month nickel post.

i went out this morning and tried using your info and dug a lot of junk close to where you guys have been suggesting but not one nickel. The guy I was with was using an Ace 250 and he dug a couple. I will keep on trying and I will let you know when I start to find them. Thanks for your help. PJ

They are kind of like wheat pennies... for the most part right now arent worth a heck of a lot after all that digging. But that may be what we are left with.
