Nice Weather Equals Nice Finds

Sooper Dave

Well-known member
It was a nice day to be out digging here yesterday. As luck would have it, I got a call from a home owner needing some help with a few things around the house. I hunted around this place a couple of times last year and had found over 25 CW bullets and some nice old coins. I got my work done by lunch and had about 3 hours to hunt around some. Things started right where I left off with a nice musket ball and up next was one of those huge .69 caliber Minie Balls. I took my time hunting in TTF and sniffed out some nice lead and coins. I've searched the big front yard pretty well and I'm hoping the other parts of the property is holding some nice keepers. HH & GL David.

Nice haul Dave ! :clapping:

Wondering if these were fired. A true CW Musket has three Riflings that should show up when fired. The most common was a 58 Caliber firing a I believe was a 435gr Mini Ball followed by a 50 Caliber. I am not a CW buff but I shot a lot of the old Weapons in Competition.

WTG....Dave! Kinda shocking as to how many harmonica reeds a guy finds over the years. Awhile back I was thinking about how bored those old timers must have gotten to have to resort to the harmonica all the time......judging from the amount of reeds found at most the old homesites? I'll take my HD tv instead....lol

The two on the lower left of the group photo were fired, even though the top one, someone attempted to pull it with a worm screw. Those two and one other are .58 caliber and the rest are .69 caliber drops or non fired bullets. The term "Mini Ball" comes from the inventor's last name. He was a French man of the name Claude-Étienne Minié (Meen-Ay). Our English interpretation of his name has it pronounced as 'Mini"

Yeah that's true. I enjoy thinking of how folks spent their time relaxing or entertaining themselves 100+ years ago. And how kids played with marbles and more simple toys of the times. We have come a long way with all the gadgets in our times now. Makes you also wonder where it will lead to in the future. As for me I'm an old soul and gravitate more to the simple times, but I say that as I type on my smartphone. Ha!
