Nice way to wind down the season

Went out last Sunday for a, could at any time be , last of the season hunt. As I hadn't found anything remarkable lately, I was thinking it would be nice to pull a large cent or two out of the ground. The spot I went to had already given me 3 plus a Canadian LC ( huge !!).I have been hunting in the grassy areas mostly because of the deer ticks in the woods but I figured the worst of them is past now so I ventured into the woods. Fifteen feet into the woods I got a hit that just screamed at me, I figured ,for sure , it was a bottle cap or something of that nature as I saw a couple of bottles laying nearby. I dug it anyway and only about 3 inches down I flipped over a coin. Cool, I thought , another large cent judging from the size and appearance. I put it in my pocket and kept hunting for a while with no more luck. When I got back to the car, I took another look at it and cleaned off a little of the dirt, i could tell that it was not a large cent but it was definitely old. When I got home and cleaned it up a bit more the date jumped out at me...1748. Turns out what I had found ( and here I will say that a buddy of mine had said I wouldn't find anything old there, imagine the fun I'm having with that !!) was a 1748 King George Armored Bust Half penny. That's my second 1700's coin and the oldest yet by 38 years, the other being my 1785 2 Reale. the half penny is very worn but ,surprisingly not crusty or pitted like most old coppers tend to be around here. The first pics are of my coin and the last 2 are what it used to look like.

Nice nice coin.... like you said it looks more like pocket wear than mineral and water destruction.

Interesting side note, I found this coin about 50 feet from where I found the hammer to an old flintlock pistol. Same vintage. Hmmm... makes you wonder about the story behind that.

Always a great hunt when the old coppers show up !!!
